Do you use it?

Has your life been enriched by having it?

Would your life and relationships be worse for not having it?

I don’t use any social media at all and I don’t feel I’m missing out, but perhaps there are things about social media that bring about feelings of positivity?

What’s the scoop?

Have Instagram but don't post anything or really look around it. Fb yes I use that frequently, I enjoy reading people's comments on subjects whether I agree with them or not. Enriching probably not, informative yes but find myself checking things out more independently.

So personal life?

I use Fab and without it I wouldn't have a fiancé (well, maybe I would but not the one I have) and some of the fantastic friendships I've made. I think like in much of life, social media can be a powerful and good tool depending how you use it.

I also have/use Twitter for the sex positive community and again, I've met some brilliant people as a result of it. That connection with people I probably normally wouldn't meet in the real world is a good, positive thing in my book.

Like any tool it depends entirely how you use it.

I have Facebook to catch up with Family and close Friends (who are around the world), Twitter for news and informative/entertaining accounts. I keep my filters tight on Facebook and block anyone on either who's an arse. Works for me.

Yes, I do use some social medial

Yes, my life has been enriched for having it.

Yes, my life and relationships would be significantly worse for not having it.

Social media allows you to keep in touch with people who would otherwise have slipped out of your life. Ever thought, "Hey, I wondered what happened to Joe Bloggs, who I used to see in our local every Friday?" Social media allows you to find out.

The scoop: Humans are, largely, social creatures who enjoy being in touch with other humans. Our late-capitalist society forces us apart. Sensible social media use allows us to stay in contact when otherwise we'd be isolated.

I am on insta and Facebook. It’s very easy to set them up so you’re seeing things you like.

With Facebook,

I only accept friend request from family and people I actually like, and I follow lots of lovely pages, and some support groups, as a consequence, my meander through my Facebook page is generally a lovely, and charming stream of ponies, pretty things, quotes I like and sex positive posts (plus quite a lot of uterus posts, but that’s useful so…?)

Insta is similar, lots of pretty pictures of things I like.

I don’t post very often, but usually it’ll be something I’ve done that I think others will enjoy pictures of.

It doesn’t have to be fake or unpleasant, for me it’s about how you frame your experience of it, and how you use it.

Definition of social media

: forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)

I have FB but don't post very often. I find it adds tremendous pressure to be "perfect"

I did however post a photo yesterday of the toad in the hole that I burnt with the following text :

The reality of life and social media. People are having holidays, full house renovations, pets, families, flashy cars looking the best they've ever looked. They're out there living their best lives and we're left thinking all I do is work, sleep and go out for special occasions if I'm incredibly lucky. I swear sometimes it makes you feel like you're doing life "wrong" coz you don't have all the flash stuff, the "success" stuff. Don't be measuring success by what you have, measure it by who you are as a human.

This is real life right here... Burning a toad in the hole

Fellow food burners, work, sleep & repeaters - you ain't alone and you sure as shit ain't worthless coz other people only ever show their best bits.

I have some family who try to present a perfect view but I tend to mute them as I've no real interest in that.

I don't post often but when I do it's always either a meme or something ridiculous that's happened to me that I think will make other people laugh.

The last thing I posted was when my doctor texted me to tell me about an app called "lower my drinking".

I don't live some glam fairytale life and anyone who knows me knows that. Since I only accept friend requests from people who actually know me, it would be a huge waste of time trying to carefully curate an image on there.

Good on you for keeping it real.

I use Facebook and I joined some local pages that are of interest to me. A few local businesses use Facebook to promote/run their business and the communication with them is all through messenger. It's a good way to promote your business and local charity events etc. There are local groups that advertise jobs and services which is useful.

I'm also on a local community page which was invaluable for finding a local man who went missing in the local village. He was found within the hour thanks to the power of social media.

If you ignore all the shite that's on there and just use it for what you are interested in then it's very good.

I have used FB mainly, to keep in touch with family and friends (including ex work colleagues and charity trek buddies). There are also a few groups for courses I have done (photography and proofreading) and other interests I’ve taken up during Covid (virtual walking challenges etc). I try to avoid the annoying or upsetting newsfeeds which pop up sometimes, as much as possible.

On the whole I’ve found it useful in combatting social isolation during lockdown, motivational, informative (to a degree) and supportive at times.

I’ve used Instagram to see my grandson growing up while I wasn’t able to visit him. I’ve also shared photographs from walks I’ve done with friends.

This isnt really social media in the way that Twitter and FB are though.

Otherwise any site with a forum could be considered SM. If you use the definition of Social Media it covers pretty much everything on the internet

"Social media is a computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts, and information through the building of virtual networks and communities. By design, social media is Internet-based and gives users quick electronic communication of content"

You could argue that Fab does not meet this definition due the building of virtual networks and communities not actually being part of the site. You cant make groups ect

I've got employment, kept up with very distant friends and relatives, helped strangers in dire need, arranged major birthdays, joined real groups, found workmen, bought and sold amazing stuff, stumbled over life changing info and learned a massive amount including things I'd never even knew were there.

The best one was seeing a post from a stranger on a group I was in.

She and her 9 day old baby had been admitted to my local specialist hospital with nothing but the clothes they were wearing, hundreds of mile's away from home where her husband and children were. They had no idea if the baby would live.

Within a day she had a network of new friends supporting the whole family.

That's the power of social media.

hidden location

It has irreversibly changed society in the last 20 yrs. And not for the better.

The amount of subliminal control the social media giants wield is disturbing. And most without governance.

"People posting on social media that they don’t do social media, classic!

‘Forums are communities of people sharing ideas and discussion online, so yes, they are indeed social media/ social networks.’

You are missing the other parts of the definition

Fab does not alllow for the creation of virtual networks or communities. Which are things like private groups ect "

Ah ok, so this is nothing like social media then, so you’re free to post on here to interact with other people, or to find people with similar interests to one's own, while totally not being on social media, yep totally nothing like it, will not have it said.

The thread was about how people feel social media has impacted on their lives. I was interested in that. It's gone off tangent arguing about the definition. Am I not permitted to note that?

It’s not my thinking, it’s a definition, it’s really very simple.

I am just scouring the forums to see if Mary from Nargate has any pictures of her new litter of kittens.

Nope....not a sign, strangely
