Am I justified in complaining?

couple, us we him her.

New neighbours moved in a few weeks ago and it's been a building site since mess,dust everywhere noise everyday Inc weekends up to 8most evenings including bank holidays.

Yesterday they had plasterer's in at 7:30am on a Sunday morning.

Woke me up,I went round and went nuts as I'm in the trade and wouldn't be able to get away with this.

On a Sunday after 8:30/9

Ok but 7:30 is a bit much and they where there till about 7pm.

I know it's not forever but we have had 4 weeks of 7 day's a week early till late.

Was I justified asking them to wait?

7.30 on a Sunday is too early. Don't go nuts though, you don't want to fall out with your neighbours! Be as polite as can be, the work will be finished...one day

Hell yes! I actually don't think any building work should be allowed on Sunday unless it's an emergency.

They chose not to inform you of their intentions for working hours, which lacks decency and is a bit of an own goal, i think.

That being said, going round and “going nuts” is just bad manners, exacerbates an already problematic relationship (of their creation ) and makes you come across as an aggressive/bullying nimby.

Seem to remember something, think was grand designs tbat contractors have a certain amount of lattitude but if goes on for a longer period of reasonable time you can lodge a complaint,

It takes an awful lot to really make me loose it, we have had trouble neighbours both sides for 20 year's and we've put up with a lot and I've bitten my tongue many times.

Yesterday I was shattered been woken up by the other side at 3 am shouting at each other and having a taxi waiting outside with engine running for 30mins.

Then to be woken up at 7:30 by them banging , shouting and swearing slamming doors with zero consideration for anyone I just saw red.

That's not me at all.

It's making me unwell.

Look at it like this - they are doing up the house to a good one rather than leave it like a shit hole.

Yes, 7-30 is a bit early but you going round and going "nut" you was lucky they'd not kick your teeth in.

Years ago the house we live in, we had it done up top to bottom, front garden to back - we did not live there but told neights left and right to us as its a semi house - then one day when i went around to check a bloke from across the round came around complaining of vans, trucks, starting around 8-30 to 9 and finishing usally at 6 - he lived across the road in the close. and then he compalined about us having the tree pulled down front garden for a drive - the lead builder was stading next to me as the guy walked off he muttered "you've been warned you cunts" - the builder challenged him to say it to his face and apologise and called him a cunt. The bloke never troubled us again.

I work for a coucil and I've seen many going "nuts" and almost all of them come unstuck at one time or another.

Rather than going nuts, have a polite word and this often goes a long way.

Btw, i see no problem with your next dorr builders, tell them to clear the dust etc - hope its better now

lol - not everyone is at home on Sundays many these days work on Sunday inc builders and DIYers

Its annoying OP but hopefully a short term thing.

They may have been thinking if they start earlier the job will be finished quicker?

I'd keep it polite, regardless. Not worth falling out with neighbours longterm for a short term gain.

My neighbours have been sanding day + night for the last 99 years....On sunday they were drilling at 8.30am which i thought was out of order

You were justified in complaining. Mr N will always politely have a word if he feels people are taking the mick. Our neighbours on one side no longer speak to us in part due to him asking if they'd stop throwing their dogs ball against our fence and stop them barking at us every time we open our back garden or move in the garden.

I'd much rather someone spoke to my face than behind my back

I feel a lot of people are more selfish these days, even if I thought about starting noisy work on a Sunday, the Mrs would stop me.

Don't mind say from 9/10 am onwards but 730 is ridiculous, get the For Sale sign up and move, this will happen again and again with them.

You have the right to be upset. Whenever I had to be a noisy nuisance to my neighbours in the past I'd send them nice cards with apologies in advance and then a box of chocolates afterwards, but others may have different standards.

Someone told me the other day that there is no quiet time by law which surprised me.

So I think it's all down to being diplomatic and friendly when complaining as you can easily escalate things to a huge dispute if dealing with it while you're angry.

I think it would have been polite of your neighbours to talk to you beforehand about what they need to do and what times are best for the really noisy stuff.

Of course, it could always be worse, if you had a newborn or were working shifts you'd be completely fucked by now, nevermind early Sundays.

Not enough quality sleep is probably making everything feel 10x more problematic than it is.

Do you need to improve your sleep?

Most planning applications stipulate that you can’t work on a Sunday, it’s always awkward as you don’t really want to fall out with them.At least if he apologises it might make you feel better.

I thought quiet hours were 11pm - 7am, so they were after that.

How much noise can plastering make? It's not like they're using power tools, except perhaps for the initial mixing when they use a drill.

It sounds like a friend or a plasterer doing a job "on the side" around commercial work if it's at that time on a Sunday, probably trying to make money to get by after not being able to work through the lockdowns.

I wouldn't have complained...at the most I'd have had a quiet word next time I saw them to see if they could leave it until a bit later at weekends in the future.

It would have been polite if the neighbour had explained / apologised in advance, and reassured you as to how long there may be some noise and disturbance. Maybe handed some beer over as a gesture...!

But manners appear to be a thing of the past for some folk.

Good post. I too think its 7 to 11 and would avoid a 7.30 start unless unavoidable. Our bnext door hd the skip and everthing turning up at 7-30am one week day and the travellers that were doing their drive were a bit chatty. They never told us but i saw the bight side ie improvement to their home makes the street look better
