Does a bad ending make a bad film/show?

As the question asks, if a show or film is good throughout but the ending lets it down, is it a bad film or TV show in your eyes?

I was put off watching How I Met Your Mother for years having heard of a bad ending (nothing specific) but watched it recently and loved it in spite of the ending.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give to you: "Lost". Discuss.

That's 6 awesome years of my life that I'm not getting back almost (but not entirely) ruined by the last 3 episodes.

Still bought the box set.

Yes, knowing how you’re going to end a series is surely something you should’ve thought about at the beginning.

Lost is a great example as from season 2 I was hoping that they had a good roadmap to explain all of the twists in the story, so it would end perfectly explaining what it all meant.

I get that the programme may never see another season when it starts, so if popular it will evolve but it doesn’t stop you from you going to an end point eventually.

Not necessarily. Celebrate the good and don't dwell on the bad if you enjoyed the show.

Same thing for Film series; Taken 1 and 2 were good, Taken 3 pants. But I still love the first two.

John Wick 1 and 2 great, 3 bad, but I just choose not to watch that one again.

I think a bad ending to a TV show or film prevents it from being deemed a classic.

I prefer a good ending, would never watch The Sopranos again

Not for me. I find that plot is the least interesting part of most films and TV shows and it's the characters and writing which hold my attention. Two of my favourite TV shows of all time are Seinfeld and The Sopranos had both had famously underwhelming endings.

Game of thrones….

Season 1-6 awesome groundbreaking storytelling.

Season 7… hold on, getting a bit iffy…

Season 8… what the absolute fuck have you done you idiots?

Surely the plot is part and parcel of the writing? I wouldn't say Seinfeld and The Sopranos were underwhelming endings either. Especially The Sopranos.

Dexter up to series 6 was brilliant…kind of lost its way as they strung it along after that…

Now I’ve just read that they are bringing a new Dexter out and I couldn’t be happier

Good point, I should have said character and dialogue. I liked the Sopranos ending but certainly many didn't.

That depends on what you mean by a 'bad' ending.

If you mean one that doesn't end how you'd hoped or expected (the hero doesn't get the girl) i actually like films/shows with a twist.

If you mean it's just rubbish i've seen too many ruined with ill conceived and rushed endings. As previously mentioned GoT as a case in point.

"Titanic, gutted when it sank! X"

Why bother watching a film when you know how it ends?

I don't mind a film with a twist, but more the latter of your point. An ending isn't going to satisfy everyone but at least have it make sense in my opinion

I binged GOT for 2 months before the final series came out and although I felt disappointed, I moved on pretty quickly. I can't imagine how the people who watched it from the beginning felt

This, the end of Dexter was really disappointing. Hopefully they will nail the new season in November. It's got Clancy Brown (kurgan from highlander) in it so I have high hopes.

I don't think it makes it bad, but it does make you view it in a different light I suppose. I was obsessed with Game of Thrones, so unreal and everything felt perfect during the good seasons. And then those last few seasons... so rushed and I was gutted with how it all turned out, especially Arya. I rewatch it maybe once a year, but I can't get excited for it anymore and I always find myself complaining knowing what's coming. It's ruined the show for me a little bit, but I still love it up until a certain point.
