Reports say that an ex channel 4 boss claims that Eton schoolchildren should travel up north to meet more diverse people. You would think northerners were a different species...

I was just going to say this. Every time I see or hear Boris Johnson on the tv it confirms this.

A few weeks ago he really stood out though when he ‘joked’ that Margaret Thatcher was only doing her bit (ahead of her time) for climate change when she shut down all the mines in the eighties.

Frankly I’m surprised someone didn’t shoot the bastard. He obviously has zero concept of what life is like for ‘ordinary’ people - and has no inclination to find out!

Totally.. the goon was in my village a few months ago when the Mersey broke its banks and there was no meet and greet with the locals… they were all fuming that he’d shown his face but stayed well away from the communities that would never vote a Tory in.

No I'm sure it's not a north v south but I often feel the need to defend myself geographically before making any points on a thread like this. I don't know what the different species reference means though. Different species to who or what?

When BJ said what he said about MT we looked at each other in disbelief. He is so far out of touch with the ordinary, working person that it's frightening.

Nor have I but aren't Princes William and Harry Etonians. I don't think you can be as privileged as the people who attend these places and have any real understanding of how most of us live

We do have rich people in the North I live quite near one of the most expensive places to live in the UK. Admittedly it’s because a lot of footballers reside in the area. So some of these Eton lot will already have ventured north of the M25.

I agree with a previous comment that very few mix with working class people. Not just the ones who live on council estates either, lower middle class etc…then they would get an idea of the struggles everyone has, from the single mother from a broken home doing her best. To the middle manager or nurse working shifts, who lives on a posh estate trying to improve their own and their children’s lives in the future.

Yep, I’m the west for example we have electricity and the fresh water running through the house is an open stream we just built the house on top of

Though I do get envious of Yorkshires more pleasant greenery, no place like Lancs. A shame I have to live in the south due to work, because I’d go back north tomorrow if I could!

Be beneficial for both sides imo.

I was able to go to Oxford (coming from a single mother, comprehensive background) and the Etonians (and other public schooled peeps) were generally cool people and some I'm still good friends with.

I suspect Tory MPs are not the best representation of Etonians in the same way some labour MPs aren't representative of working class northerners ...

For those who travel North on the M1 there is a big blue Government warning on the side of the motorway

Simply declares “The North”

I assume it’s in order to allow Southerners the time to contemplate any decision to continue.

I think us northerners have more time for each other and have more time to chill. I know london doesnt represent all of the south lol but whenever ive visited ,its so busy no one says hello or talks to each other.

I talk to random people on trains and buses , say good morning to people walking past me, this just doesnt seem to happen when i visit down south

I met a public school educated man on Facebook who went to Oxford.

When he came to me the first time for a drink in a pub he said it was the first time he had ever been to a council estate.

God knows what the Eton lot think about is council estate people but they don't need to go up North to find out. London is very diverse.

As an northern schoolchild I was always told I should go down south and meet southerners, as there is absolutely no diversity at all in London, especially schoolchildren from Eton.
