Why is being horny called being horny?

Is it to do with rhinos?

Asking for a friend with rampant horn

"Ah, it’s because of the god Pan. "

But didn't Pan have hooves also tho? Why are we horny rather than hoofy?

Exeter

During medieval times the instrument that you had to blow to call the whores in was a horn.

The person who blew it was the hornee, which over time became horny as we know it today

Is this even true or are you pulling my proverbial?

I assume that horns have always been a phallic symbol, in mythology and popular slang, so only one small step to horny, and then to a gender-free usage ?

What about horny handed though, which means something quite different?

Horns are hard, so when something hardens it becomes horny. That’s the definition I’ve always understood anyway

Pretty sure it's due to the erect cock sticking proudly out of a man, like a horn?
