"I saw a company who could take your remains and crush them into a diamond. It'll be a mighty small diamond with the dust from one person. We don't burn down to much....." Yeah, I think it’s only something like 20% of what’s left after cremation is carbon, which is then used to make a pressure grown diamond.

"I wanted to leave my body to medical science but that is a bloody nightmare and no guarantees they will take you, once you're dead, anyway, ffs! " Last time I checked there were only 2 places on the UK that will take your body too, one in Nottingham and not sure where where other is. My Dad was accepted and they told me at the time what they had planned for him due to the type of cancer he had which I thought was brilliant and he would have been fascinated to know that he had helped others the way he did. I'm signed up for medical science too but the chances of them accepting you are small. 2nd choice is as a doner

" Anyone can sign up but when I went throughbit all with my Dad, they told me they will only take certain cadavers dependant on the nature of death and if there is a need for certain criteria at the time. They buy in body parts from globally dependant on needs at the time for either developing new methods or to learn about rare diseases. My Dad had a very rare and aggressive type of cancer so within 7 days he was used in a study by various specialists who came from around the world (very cool) You can also decide how long they keep the body or parts for (up to 30yrs) and what they do with it when they have gained all they need from it and they pay for any arrangements too, its a great system that the UK is sadly quite behind other parts of the world with. Good on your parents for choosing to do this

"It's funny I used to want cremated til I thought about the emissions cause & how that breaks the biodiversity circle of life I am currently signed up to go to science however going to redacting that as the scientists may have good intentions of curing, the company's however do not, they profit off the sick nor do I agree with chasing immortality, quality of life more important than just being kept alive to suffer for someone else's emotions. So now I'd much rather be unprodded or tampered with & be put in the ground to regenerate it as I was intented to be post life; I took energy from this earth to live in many forms, that has to be given back, it's a delicate balance." And you shouldn't need to request an eco burial all coffins should be degradable

"I’d love a beach funeral pyre on my cousins land in Sutherland. But that ain’t happening So I’d love a woodland burial my mates dad bought him and his family a family sized plot and the bonus is you can bury your pets in there too I like that idea " Can you really put pets too? Love this cementing my preference for a natural burial even more now.

Once you have bought it it’s yours and you can bury pets and also bury ashes too You have to pay for the burial fee but I don’t think it’s much… You can’t just rock up and start digging your own holes

"Just an aside........ but how long will the dead hedgehog that I buried a couple of months ago in the garden ( shallow grave covered over with boulders ) take to decompose." It's largely dependent on temperature, soil composition and how long the hedgehog was above ground after death (fly egg laying). It's likely that all of the flesh will have decomposed / been consumed and all that will remain will be a collection of small bones and, obviously, the quills.

"It'll be a mighty small diamond with the dust from one person. We don't burn down to much....." The first stage of the process involves extracting the actual carbon which makes up only 0.5 - 4%) of the cremated remains (most is calcium oxide from the bones/teeth). The diamonds produced range from 0.03 - 2.0 carats depending on the volume of the cremated remains and the type and lengtyh of the pressure / heat cycle.

"Death is so fucking expensive. " Go for a cremation only arrangement. The company will collect the body and arrange cremation for ~ £795 (2020 pricing in Bath). No service, no mourners, no flowers, no music; just a straight cremation fitted in with the crematorium schedule. You can opt to have the ashes afterwards.

" I would genuinely love to do something like that. And it's something I will look into and encourage those who I leave behind to look at. I don't want a big funeral, a party, ridiculously priced flowers and a send off. But even £750 is ridiculous but obviously fantastic compared to burial and services. But on the other hand I want my family to do what makes them feel the most content. I just worry about the cost. I can barely save for a house at the moment nevermind a funeral. It's something I'll buy cover for at some point. I just don't want my family to fork out.

It's something I'll buy cover for at some point. I just don't want my family to fork out. " I put some 'buy your funeral plan' flyers in the recycling last night. Any sort of plan / insurance generally involves making a lot of money for the people marketing them. You are, probably, better off putting aside a small amount into a mutual (i.e. the society is run for its members and not shareholders) building society. £5 a month is £600 after 10 years (obviously try to find an account that will pays some kind of interest. The funeral industry tends to publish annual data on costs in December. Their costs are only heading in one direction and it's way too easy for funeral directors to take advantage of families at a very difficult time e.g. by up-selling (casket / vehicles). My elderly neighbour was thoroughly ripped off by a local funeral director when her husband died (£4200 for the casket, hearse, cremation and service etc. plus an additional £300 for a bouquet of flowers!) and £250 for the hire of a room in a pub with a couple of plates of very unremarkable sandwiches (no drinks!) after the service.
