Water meter leak

I’ve got a water meter in the house that is slightly leaking where the fixing is secured to the pipe. I’ve taken it off to find it has a flat plastic washer inside. I’ve tightened it as much as possible but it still leaks. Does it need something applying to the thread to stop it leaking or what is it I’m doing wrong? Thanks for any sensible and non sarcastic answers.

You need PTFE tape around it.

The water meter is usually supplied and fitted by your local water company so best get them to fix it.

Normally PTFE tape does the trick as someone stated, however as it’s owned by the water company it’s best to get them out to repair for free.

Odd because there wasn’t any PTFE tape on it.

Also change the washer if you are doing it yourself.

Take the existing one to a diy shop. Lots of different sizes in plumbing. But as said, it's the water company's meter.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I think you may be liable for the cost of leaked water unless they fix it. Every drip is costing you until you tell them it was badly installed and needs repairing.

Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

Just tired report it online and their response was… find a private plumber as it’s not our problem. Nice.

Who’s responsible for fixing a water leak?

All water companies have a code of practice on leaks. However the responsibility for repairing the leak depends on where the leak is.

If there’s a leak on your side of the meter, on the public footpath or external stop valve, it’s your responsibility to fix the leak.

However, if it’s the first time you’ve had a leak like this and it’s not too expensive, your water company will usually repair it – although they don’t have to. It’s also possible they could ask you to pay, but offer you something towards the cost.

If there’s a problem with the water meter, this is the water company’s responsibility.

If the leak is due to a damaged water pipe, or if the pipe bursts, responsibility for fixing it depends on which section of the pipe is damaged.
