On Tuesday, a very hard decision was made to have our eldest dog put to rest. She was a stunning long haired chihuahua, with the biggest character and personality.

It's hit me harder than I ever imagined.. All I keep seeing is those beautiful dark doey eyes staring up at me before she went to sleep.

I keep thinking of her little quirks, her little poses and at times - little dog syndrome spells.

Can any pet owners please share some stories about their loved little (or not so little) critters, or unique little personalities they exhibit.

Ma last Border Collie went to the Great Kennel in the Sky about 10 years ago (I've had 3 generations of them), but he was not only a Houdini, but a kleptomaniac to boot

I’m so sorry for the loss of your fur baby,

I think I hurts more than when a human dies. My boy had to go to the vets Monday we could put he’s got severe arthritis in his paws and a crushed, calcified vertebrae so he’s in immense amounts of pain that he never showed. We’ve got meds for him now and he’s improving.

He barks at visitors before they leave the house, I don’t think he wants people leaving. ??

I didn't think it would hit me like this, we knew it was coming, she had a malignant growth on her tummy and was on medication for pain and infecfion. Ours barked at anyone coming in until picked up, then she'd be your bestie

I'd be devastated if anything happened to my boy. As would my kids. Dogs inveigle their way into your life. I'm very sorry you've lost yours. I have a 7 year old rescue terrier. He can't cope with temperatures below 20 or rain or squeaky doors or a postman crossing the street...two streets away. Dogs trust and love absolutely don't they?

I lived out in the sticks and left ma back door open 24/7 in the Summer so he could go and bark at the cows in the field behind our garden when I was at work. I spent a weekend raising the fence all round the garden after he started jumping over it, then another weekend putting slabs round the bottom after he started digging under it.

He'd bring all sorts of random shite back from round the village, kiddies clothes off washing lines, a bicycle pump, a jar of fishing bait, numerous balls & toys, most of which I knew where he'd nicked them from and I mad him take them back. One thing he brought back that I couldn't suss out where it came from, and nobody claimed was a Garden Gnome So I was stuck with that

I'm sorry for your loss OP, I dread to imagine the day my boy goes. He's affectionate and mad as a box of frogs.

I love watching him sniff around the yard and always know when he has found an interesting scent as the nose goes into the air.

He always lets me know he wants share of my food. He can put his nose right to the plate and I'm confident he won't try and dig in uninvited.

When he wants to play he'll pick up a toy and beat my leg with it to get my attention.

I love how at night he falls asleep curled up on my bed and by morning he has spread out completely and has over half the bed.

We rescued a old cat called hickory his moved house with us three times an takes everything in his stride, his missing his front tooth an looks a right scuff but his a handsome gentleman in his own way. We have no idea how old he is an how long his got left but can’t imagine him not being around.

Where there's a will, there's a way ours only pinch from us, crafty at it as well. Then they go sit somewhere trying to look all innocent when trying to find the house keys they've nabbed from table and stashed somewhere.

Dogs are awesome, I often wake up in odd shapes from him pushing me during the night. I could go on forever about his traits.

Last one, I love how if I have any facial hair he nibbles on it. Anyone who has seen him do it assumes it hurts but it doesn't. I often have a bald spot on my chin where he has plucked.

My heart breaks for you. So sorry for your loss.

Losing a pet is so hard and unless you are an animal lover you will never understand it.

My dog is like one of my children to me.

He is loyal and never leaves my side, the love they give you is like nothing else.

I dread the day anything happens to him. Not sure I will ever get over it.

I don't have any children, and would never compare, but it has been devastating. She was always loving and wanted to be close to us. We knew this day was coming but don't think we would ever be prepared.

I know what you mean about non animal lovers not knowing, I had to deal with someone yesterday from work who doesn't like dogs, but fortunately he still seemed to empathize.

I really feel for you OP.

I had my 11 year old Jack Russell put to sleep last November it's awful and you miss them like crazy.

He was a crazy little man, stubborn as hell and would do as he was told only when it suited him. He knew what we wanted from him and would behave most of the time but was very wilful.

Even though he wasn't allowed in my bed he'd sneak in when I was sleeping and be on my pillow snoring away every morning.

I miss him like mad.

Sorry to hear this lovely x

My terrier was an absolutely adorable arsehole...

Did what he wanted when he wanted, disappeared in the forest for 20 minutes and came back shouting at me as if it was all my fault

He was my little shadow and when he died in my arms it broke my heart and I howled like a baby, but day by day it hurts a little less

Small dogs do seem to have be stubborn and head strong, in my experience, but in such a likeable way. She did the same when being told no or to not do something, drew dirty looks at us while doing so

We started to let her to bed with us when first became ill, was rare beforehand, and now I miss her waking up snuggled in between us both, snoring away.

Awh, thanks

We often referred to her as a little arsehole, in a loving way though, she was spoilt and showed it often Literally turn her back on you in a mood if told her no at times.

I'm glad we were both able to hold her, I can't remember a time or even if I ever have cried like I have past couple days.

One of my cats, is like a dog. He always knows when Grandma is coming and waits by the door for her. He also runs to the door every time someone knocks.

One of my others is a little tart, she's shouts at anyone who comes in the house (including the Tesco delivery driver) until they've given her a fuss

A family member has a cat that thinks he's a dog, plays fetch, lays on his back wanting belly rubs.

All ours bark at people coming to the door, but all just being attention seeking starts we joke saying they'd happily leave with anyone being friendly with them.
