Mulching mowers, some advice

I've had quite a few clients expressing interest in mulching mowers recently. Personally i'm not a fan though i do admit that they have one major advantage over collecting mowers in that because they fire the trimmings back into the lawn there's no waste to deal with.

However there have several disadvantages that the salesman will never tell you so be aware:

You can't cut long or damp grass as trimmings will inevitably be left on the surface. If it's damp you'll end up walking them everywhere. It may be necessary to increase the frequency of cuts, as this is more weather dependent a good finish is less achievable and will take longer.

Blades need to be sharper in order for the mulching to be effective increasing the service intervals.

Because of the way they operate they need to be more powerful. This makes them heavier and more expensive than the equivalent collecting mower.

They will increase the amount of w.e.e.d.s present as seeds are put back on to the lawn rather than being composted along with the trimmings.

You're welcome. I hope you find it useful (the post that is, not my profile).
