I've never owned a gaming system, but I'm quite interested in what it's like using the virtual reality ones.

To be honest I haven't ever seen one apart from on the telly, are they any good and have you any recommendations?

Does it end up being very expensive as you keep having to buy new games?

I have a VR headset that I use with my Samsung note.

I've not used it for a while but it was really fun and theres lots if free games you can download to your phone and play for free.

Or you can visit places .

Maybe you can try in a store and see what you think of them before buying.

So whats it like?

Depends on the system to be honest. With what I use I forget it's not real on occasions. It really does feel like "you're there" but it honestly depends on so many factors with one main one.

You've got headsets that work alone (the Oculus Quest 2), Play Station headsets (obviously needs the Playstation) and PC Vr headsets that need a good PC to run them.

From my own dabbling, it's fair to say that the more sheer processing power you have, the better the experience. "VR" is kind of a catch all phrase just as "Car" is a catch all phrase. Whilst a mini cooper and a Bugatti Veron are both cars, it's a different thing riding in both of them if you catch my drift.

Personally speaking, I use a Valve Index with a high end PC. One of the most expensive options but also the best in my experience. In the right game or experience you just get lost in the fantasy world. For example, a game called Star Wars: Squadrons came out last year where you play as a pilot and get to fly some of the ships from the Star Wars movies.

It was absolute pure wish fulfillment for me. I was piloting the spaceship. I was dog fighting in a fight for my life and there where genuine moments where I kept forgetting "it's...not...real".

Alternatively I'm also a pinball fan. I dont have the wallet to spend anything from £1000 to £5000 on every pinball table I like and I certainly don't have the space for one pinball table let alone 50 or 60 of them.

But in VR...can play them all and it;s like the table is right there in front of me.

But how VR gets you is really not with the games (which are great but not exactly loads of good ones at the moment compared to the more mature standard gaming market)...its the social interactions. I can stand in a virtual room and have conversations with friends anywhere you can imagine at any time I like. It's great for talking with mates that live in another country as it's like your hanging out in the same room.

Good for exercise, good for porn (it is...aint gonna lie), good for exploring places you might want to go on holiday. It's amazing quite frankly BUT it's going to take a while for the market to mature. It's not the over night hit some companies hoped it would be but as time goes on it will continue to get better and better. Once you have the headset it doesn't cost more than current gaming. Loads of free stuff to explore till you find something you want to buy.

So do I recommend it to people? Depends on the person. I've been gaming since...1983 and it's a big hobby of mine, my wife's and our kids. So it's a natural evolution...plus I just love sticking mates in VR for the first time (or even a few meets we have had over) as it does blow their minds.

If you're genuinely curious, try to get a demo before you buy. If you want the best budget headset..it's the Oculus Quest 2 which is about £350 I think. Good starting point, solid VR headset, gives a good experience and there's loads of free stuff to enjoy.

If you want something for all round gaming, get a playstation 5 and wait a bit for the headset they have releasing for it next year (you can at least play more traditional games). Only go up to the level I am if your a hardcore gaming fan with a high end gaming PC.

If you go on youtube and search "Up is not jump" the guys does a really good job of explaining it all for people who have never tried...plus he's funny.

I've only tried it once, on a motorcycle racing Sim/game and after about 10 minutes I felt really queasy.

I get travel sick in real life as well, but not if I am driving or riding.

I've seen some of the mods and they look fairly cool. I've often had the intention of using them and then I get stuck into Skyrim vanilla.

I think that I would want a stand-alone one as I don't have a PlayStation or a powerful laptop etc.

I'm wondering if there has been any new advances or recommendations.

Sort off there forever sort off rental systems it’s a hafe and hafe

Just like any digital content they resvre the right to take the content off they store front any time they please

Normally in like 6-7 years to make space for new games but what this means

Is if you don’t have it downloaded and stored locally when they pull the content you can never re download it again

Hence why it’s a hafe and hafe

You own it but they own the rights to take it back anytime they please

Oculus Quest 2 is probably your best bet if you want stand alone, although I think they have gone up in price recently and are now called Meta Quest 2.

Used to be you had to link to your Facebook account, but this is no longer the case and you can make an account on Oculus to sign into it.

If you Google the Oculus store you can have a look at the games on offer and the price points. You can sideload games on the Quest with SideQuest also and most of these are free but aren't as slick as the games you buy in store.

I think it really depends on which games you enjoy if it will be value for money for you. I spend a fair amount of time in VR Chat which is a good laugh (karaoke rooms can be fun), but games like Beat Saber and Walkabout Mini Golf are good for playing with friends.

It really is, especially on expert or +. I only play it with my blinds shut. Neighbours don't need to see me in my underwear sweating all over the place while flailing around.

Got the quest 2 few weeks back. The hype is real, vr porn, chat sites, horizon worlds, bigscreen and vrchat. Looking for new friends to meet and explore with on there. Ive found stripclubs, xxx cinemas even pubs with pool, darts and airhockey. Vrchat has potential choosing infinate avatars and the possibilities are endless. Post your vrchat or meta usernames and add eachother x

Depends from game to game :

I play GT7 ( sim racing ) u buy the game ( cd ) the console ( ps5 )

But after , if u don’t pay a year rent in Play station store , it doesn’t let u play complete game . Can’t play against others ..Only let’s play small demos in arcade off line mode .

Other games , unless u keep buying characters or upgrades ( the famous - pay to win ) u will never get there

This days is a lot of exploration .

I’m no expert but in PC gaming u have higher chance to play more for free then play station or Xbox consoles

The thing is : a Gaming pc can cost £2000 with high risks of virus ( scares me ) n a console is £450 - not so risky to get hacked zzz

In quick words . I know nothing

But I suggest to research about the games you wanna play and try to find the best platform PC or consoles . PC in general rule I think is a winner . I just didn’t gone for it cause is a lot of effort just to build one and freaks me out with have £2000 engine online …

So I gone PS. And I pay £50 a year to be online with them xxx Netflix is £15 a month is so bad

Christmas Day all day with my daughter and we couldn’t play anything decent . Was rubbish

Can’t believe all it had is Cringe ( again ) and a couple of jinngly shits no one wants to watch . Specially “ not again “

So £50 PS a year is not that bad , guess X box must have a similar system on they platform

It’s interesting you say waiting for the market to nature, I remember going into VR experience cafes back in 2000 and there was a huge amount of excitement & interest and things like VRML apps were being taught on my multimedia course to design spaces yet it seems to have declined since even though tech and gaming has grown. What do you think happened ? Not enough VR software engineers? Or just too expensive to develop ?

Il-2 sturmovik is very good in VR as well, really feels like you are flying ww2 aircraft.

DCS world is similar for modern day fighter aircraft but it needs a top end PC and my god, the learning curve is steeper than Everest!
