Good afternoon all.

I'm seeking advice off those that holiday alone abroad.

Do you use a travel company if so which one/s or do you book everything yourself?.

Thank you in advance.

I'd say it depends what you're looking for and how much support you want.

Working in travel, I know places where singles are welcomed, and don't have to pay huge supplements.

I'd recommend to do your homework and book flexibly in this new era.

I travel alone and always went with Thomas Cook. Hays Travel took over and equally as good. I usually fly with Jet2

surrounded by twinkly lights

I make a list of what I want to do and send it all to my broker, she sorts it all out for me at fabulous prices

I do lot of solo travelling. The answer to your question is very subjective.

1) What kind of holiday are you planning? A relaxed beach-side holiday, walking through historic cities or spending time in nature?

2) Are you looking for some alone time or do you enjoy talking to strangers?

3) How lazy are you about making the bookings?

I personally prefer the mountains and I have made trips to some Arctic regions. This is what I do:

1) I book the flights myself.

2) I book the hotel rooms myself.

3) I book day activities like hikes/dogsled/snowmobiles with some company. Sometimes I just use a single company to plan my activities after giving them the specific ones which I feel are must-dos.

By not tying myself to single travel agency, I have enough freedom planning my trips and is relatively less expensive. But it is a lot of work that I am happy to do.

On socialising, I usually find some people to talk to during my day activities. I check with them to see if they would like to have dinner together. Mostly works. But not all the time. One could try booking dorms/hostels to socialise with more people. But I need complete silence to fall asleep and dorms don't guarantee that. Hence I book single rooms. If you really want to socialise big time, I would recommend to go with group travel plans where you meet same people everyday.

Travelling solo is a great experience. You get a lot of freedom to do random things without having to worry much. But remember that being in the room alone in an unknown country can be depressing. So whether you find someone to socialise or not, always come back to room only when you are going to sleep.

Sorry for the essay. Hope it helps

On a mooch

I book it all individually and build it to suit what I want. The only time I used a company was when I went Egypt, I wanted to tour around so was purely a safety reason.

It really does depend what you wish to do OP.

Since I’ve been on my own I have never booked through a travel company. It’s so easy to do it all yourself in one afternoon online.

I generally go to Thailand, Cambodia or Vietnam due to it being cheap and easy to travel around. It’s also easy to meet and chat with other travellers as well.

I don’t think I’ll ever walk into a travel agency again.

Well thank you everyone for your replys. Its certainly given me something to think about when I've decided where I want to go haha.

All I would like is a nice clean sunny beach to relax and bars restaurants close by for the evening.

Thank you once again and be good.

And if you can't be good be careful.

The first time I went to Thailand was alone, booked flights and nothing else, with no plans. Just told the taxi driver to take me to any cheap hotel in the Bangkok center.

Just booked every hotel after that 1st night, using a well known hotel booking site.

It was the best holiday ever.
