The first humans. Nobody can know what they really looked like but lots of people reckon they used different coloured mud or woad to decorate themselves

More than likely they were just dirty bastards who didn't like to wash. So no vanity involved

Lanarkshire

We know that in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages people used dyes and pigments on their bodies. We have wonderfully preserved items of clothing too. Beautifully made from leather. They also made amulets, bangles, brecelets, armlets, necklaces etc. They also did tattooing. Once the ability to smelt metals came along (5,000 years ago) they made jewellery.

Well they wouldn't have had mirrors so they wouldn't have known what they looked like only what other people did.

I googled this but amazingly the first mirror as we understand it was only invented in 1835 ! So until that point people were reliant on a reflection in water or on polished stone or metal.

Jewelery is far far older than metals, there's evidence that Neanderthal (an entirely different species to us) wore Jewelery over 100,000 years ago and shells with holes drilled in them go back at least 75000 years.

Maybe it was both Romans and Egyptians they obviously hung out at the same establishments. Seeing each other in contrasting outfits jealousy ensues and here my friends we have the birth of vanity
