"Depends on the education. If all you know is lots of facts, but you can't reason or evaluate or consider different viewpoints, then that's not helpful. However, if the education is decent, it should teach you those things alongside the facts. You only have to look at the situation in places where there is a lack of education to realise its importance - to women's equality, to striving for social justice and for environmental awareness. I think education is really important, but that's not to say it all has to come from a book. A lot of "education" happens through life experience too." Excellent reasoning! | |||

Perils of education right there. To reply to the OP, I think it's important that people think. Critically. Challenge. At the same time that includes challenging the validity of what they think. Recognising and not falling into a Dunning-Kruger trap. | |||

"Educated in what ? By whom ? " Crucial questions. Also to what ends, and for whose benefit ? There are repressive and authorian regimes with high levels of formal Education where the citizens are actively taught not to question authority or challenge certain 'facts'. | |||

"[Removed by poster at 04/09/21 15:35:46]" Personally, I do not think education can ever be excessive, especially in our times when there is so much disinformation and fake news - Covid being just one example of being used by governments which provided utter confusion, Brexit was another etc etc. Education is not about reciting medieval poems or knowing every date in modern history etc. Education is about learning to critically assess a situation and that can be taught at any age and in any environment. So it is about reading not one but several sources, that are independent from each other to have a chance (and it is a chance only) of arriving at something reminiscent of the truth. Education and associated personal growth (for me at least) never ever stop.... if they did I would not want to be around. Finally, education can be so much fun. From learning another language or an instrument, from learning a strategic game like chess or painting... you name it... there is so much fun to be had! It makes us humans what we are. | |||
