I'm a regular runner and just wondered if many other Fabbers pound the pavements or trek across the trails?

Had a lovely five miler tonight through the woods as the sun was setting, it was magical.

I am anatomically (biomechanically) unsuited to running, but when I was out walking first thing this morning I spoke to several people, one an attractive slim lady in running gear; Lycra beautifully accentuates cameltoe labia first thing in the morning!

I pound my wheelrims on the pavements (and the track and on court) in lieu of running. I run with my shoulders

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

I used to but I got told off after my last back surgery..... no more running for me unless a lion is chasing me apparently.

I negotiated to allow running if a bull was after me too

I started doing some cycling during lockdown (along with about a million other people) and really like going up over the moors. But I'm not that "bike fit" as I only do about 40-50 miles a week. But I love the speed on the downhills - it's a real adrenaline rush hitting 50mph on those skinny little wheels

I only took up the wheelchair track racing recently, but have been pushing in my regular chair on the pavements for a while. I've played wheelchair basketball for ages (hence pounding the wheelrims on a court).....

Downhill in a wheelchair is fun - I don't think I got 50mph though

Nice to hear you enjoy your cycling

I was a daily runner but haven’t had the motivation over the last year, not sure why.

I should try getting back into it.

I try to go running 3 times a week. As a previous post said its definitely good for the body and soul, just not your knees and back.

Trouble is though I'm always really horny after a run. I guess the blood gets pumping a bit too much

Oops, sorry. There's an expression about assuming stuff. I didn't get the court reference at all ??

Wheelchair racing is something I've had an interest in since uni, as I worked as part of a team developing a new concept for a racing chair back in the 1990s.

It's absolutely fine! I'd like to compete with the racing but need to improve my push technique first. It's very different to a day chair or basketball chair. I will eventually be looking for a bespoke racing chair (I shall need to rob a bank!) I play wheelchair basketball competitively (at an astoundingly low level )

Off road running is definitely where my enjoyment is. I do quite a few bits of the SWCP, and I'm going to try and do some on Dartmoor as it's not a place.i know all that well. Did a 10 miler round Haytor a few weeks ago and that was epic

That's cool, I was watching the GB Vs Japan match earlier today. Didn't follow all the rules but loved the action.

For some reason watching someone tip over in a chair looks a lot more painful than someone just falling over ??

Yes indeed I am a keen runner.

Currently training for a marathon end of October. This week I have run 2 interval training session 5 & 6 miles each, a recovery run tonight of 4 miles and have 16 miles to run on Sunday. Plus I walk 3.5 miles 5 days a week.

I could happily chat about running all day

Good luck with it. The real challenge is keeping injury free with all the training. Get to the start line injury free and you'll be fine

Yeah I had the basketball on whilst I tried to WFH Really frustrating that they kinda went to pieces in the last quarter but Japan executed their press very very well. Hard to defend...

It can hurt, depends how you fall. I can't yet right myself without unstrapping and falling out because I don't have an ultra lightweight chair. Mine is a fucking chariot I've fallen over with my day chair - didn't hurt, just looked like a tit

Yeah the last few minutes are best forgotten - not a disaster, but Japan were just so assured and didn't put a foot wrong (pardon the expression)

There was one guy who fell backwards and couldn't get back up and two guys (a GB and a Japanese) had to roll up and sort of hoist him up. That wasn't as smooth as some of the other recovery manoeuvres ??

That was Abdi Jama, the best 1 point player in the world! 1pt players have upper limb deficits and/or significant trunk instability so he doesn't have enough core strength to right himself, basically. The fact he manages to shoot from outside the key is fucking amazing! They were following basic operating procedures for retrieving a low point player from the floor. Us high pointers get left upside down to work it out ourselves

I love running trails. I also like to climb a mountain and then run the ridge/top/down. I've just been ill for a spell and I'm yet to regain my fitness. I'll be starting along the clifftops and in the woods where I live. Distance no object, just running and breathing and meditating on the trot.

Enjoy people, whatever your running entails. It's a sweet sweet joy in life. Do it while you can!!!

For the more seasoned runners. When do you actually get to the point where you don’t feel like you’re dying when running lol. Like when you can jog and have a conversation.

I did couch to 5k and now run 3/4 5ks a week. But I’m still not at the conversational jogger stage.

It depends...

I run 20-25 miles a week, and I can run them at a conversational pace or at a pace where I can hardly breathe and am barely hanging on. So it depends how fast you are doing your 5k.

If you want to talk more, run slower. There's no rules saying you can't run slow

It's all about pace. Learning to run slow is nearly as hard as learning to run fast. Easiest way is to run with someone slower than you. Ideally you'd have a mix of sessions, one a week doing speed or strength (hills) will see a significant change in your fitness, one at mid pace (probably what you're doing now) a long run at easy pace.

Very true. I guess I feel like I’m already slow. I get passed a lot!! Probably averaging just under 6 minutes a km. I think I just need to keep going and be patient.

"For the more seasoned runners. When do you actually get to the point where you don’t feel like you’re dying when running lol. Like when you can jog and have a conversation.

I did couch to 5k and now run 3/4 5ks a week. But I’m still not at the conversational jogger stage.

It depends...

That's not a bad pace. It easy to watch Mo doing 4 minute miles and thinking that is what all running is, but a 10min mile is perfectly fine.

As above, try to mix it up - some speedwork, some hills and some endurance - and you will soon see some pacing improvements.

6min/k isn't that slow at all. I know it's hard but try not to worry what other runners are doing, they may be doing a different distance/session to you. Some days I'm doing a long or slow run and get overtaken, others I'm working speed and going past other runners, I never think badly of the pace others are doing - though when I'm near the end of a long run and struggling I may think nasty thoughts about the fresh faced sparkly runner skipping past on what is probably their first mile

"I love running trails.

Have you tried sky running? "

I've ran in the air and on walls with a rope and harness.. But What is sky running?

I’m a runner and have been chatting to a few people on fab with the same interests.

I’ve got the great north run coming up next week but I tend to stick to 10k and under and parkruns.

Would love to meet up with people with similar interests in the north east

Sounds good. A run/cycle duathlon?

What distance is that?

Looking at a sprint duathlon to start so a 5km run, 22km cycle, 5km run.

First time I’ve said that in any public space so can’t go back on it now.

I used to run regularly , mainly off road/endurance running events and free-running (no clock watching, not worrying about pace, not worrying about heart rate etc - just enjoying nature).

But then I had a hip injury playing rugby 5 years ago and my hip/knee joints have sort of fallen apart after that.

So now I just do HIIT workouts with a 3-5 mile yomp every now and then (which always makes my hip protest!).

What are your aims with running?

Go faster?

Or enjoy running and being fit?

The best bit of advice anyone (my friend Eric) ever gave to me was “it’s all about time in your feet. Don’t worry about speed. Just do whatever you do, for a bit longer”.

30 enjoyable Minutes at 6min/Km is better than hating doing 20 terrible minutes for the sake of a few seconds improvement.

Unless, of course, your aim is speed. Then just run faster lol.
