I watched 6 of my seven ducklings leave the garden and take to the skies. The one that was left behind, over the next few days, was unrecognisable. It was listless, did not waddle around the garden, did not want to eat... did not come up to me. In short, he looked depressed.

I called the RSPB, they came out as I thought it was injured. They told me he was likely a bit traumatised because he had lost his family. With my consent, they took him to a nearby lake where there are lots of mallards and I believe he is happier now.

Maybe ducks... and all animals do have souls?

With dogs its is maybe a little bit more obvious? I felt almost a daft when I asked the RSPB whether it was possible for a duck to be depressed and they told me that that was definitely so.

With dogs its is maybe a little bit more obvious? I felt almost a daft when I asked the RSPB whether it was possible for a duck to be depressed and they told me that that was definitely so.

I suppose ducks don't really show it in their eyes but I think all animals have feelings but get over it quicker.

Well cats and dogs or any pet in the UK has now been promoted from being classed as an object.

12 million dogs in the country at the moment - it will soon be compulsory to own a dog and another few years they will get the vote. Shame they can't drive heavy goods vehicles though.

TBH I would have been sceptical if somebody had told me but I watched these ducklings for nearly three months and I got to know them quite well. The behaviour of the one left behind was just so sad. The only way I can describe it... really sad.

Pure love. He used to chase the others away when I walked up to the fence when he was a baby. Then bite my arm

I had one rabbit for a few months but could see she was depressed & was just sitting there looking into space quite upsetting to see so I when out & bought her a sister brought her home & the change in my first rabbit was incredible so yes animals do have souls & both rabbits are in-separable now

Awwwh, glad to hear the little duckling found refuge. Years ago, some family friends moved to south of France and had two dogs, can't think of the breed, but they had lovely long coats. They thought because of the heat, that it'd be best to get their coats shaved/cut real shot. After this they didn't seem right, went off their food, weren't interacting as normal, so they got in touch with vets, and it turned out they were depressed due to losing their lovely long coats.

Watching them hunt aphids on the vegetables and they are mindful of each other, constantly checking on each other and if one gets harassed they all pile in on the attacker, fascinating little shits

I don't believe in souls. I think humans are so needy and greedy and have to have more than we already do. If we all just accepted that life was a once shot deal we might just treat the planet with a bit more respect.

I'd argue they are more soulful than humans as we are blessed or cursed with such self consciousness, and in our modern incarnation we have probably lost touch with some important feelings and instinct.

They certainly have personalities that are individual. They show empathy and altruism....some show complex behaviour that is learned and also worked out...

Souls are a bit of a human construct for spirituality and religion...the indefinable bit of you that is ...well, you.

They definitely have that...but as to whether they have an awareness of it...who knows...

Definitely, I had two dogs, when Milo died, Lucy just wanted to sit on my knee, not done it before, wouldn’t sleep in the bed they shared for 12 years and didn’t want to go for walks, it was heartbreaking

Looking at them... him.. the behaviour after the others had left suggested something was really wrong and "depressed" and "Traumatised" felt like quite appropriate terms. The person who explained it to me (in more detail than I m doing on here) was a qualified zoologist so I took her word for it.

Big question. I don't know the answer.

I think we can connect with animals on a quite deep level, I know animals suffer when their circumstances change for the worse or a companion dies. I know my tortoise recognises my voice and will come towards me and sit listening while I chat rubbish

. I'm also very wary of anthropomorphisation (is that a word?)

Depends on how you define soul. If you define it as a separate entity to the body, it's topic of huge debate among scientific and religious groups. If you are talking about having emotions, they definitely do have.

Animals are an amazing creatures, when my parents died we had to rehome their dog as it was pining, we tried for months to coax him out of it but couldn't, we rehomed him to a lovely family who sent us a video after just a few days, the change in him was amazing, he was so happy. My current dog is amazing, he knows exactly what to do when my fibromyalgia is flaring up, as well as when Andy is about to have a fit.

I work with exotic animals too, they are all so intuitive.

But ducks are genwyically programmed to flock.. So yes.. Being alone will affect the duck.

But does the duck have a concept of 'I'? This is the bit that is generally called the soul...

It was a bit tongue in cheek, wasn't it?

I am not sure a duck knows it is a duck. I think my ducklings "knew" at some level that they were a group of warm fluffy beings that ran, slept, ate together, kept each other warm and kind of "played" in the small pond. ANd then when only one was left over, it would have felt a sense of loss... I guess that is the level at which is was experiencing the loss?
