Save them from what? It really would depend. If the 100 people were sick and sadly going to die anyway, and the 10 people were healthy and I'd be murdering them, then no.

If all 110 people were going to die anyway UNLESS I picked 10 to kill, then sure. It makes sense to do that. Pointless everyone dying!

I'm making big assumptions here as there are some gaps in the question.

Yes, in order to save the 100 amazonian nymphomaniacs, I would gladly kill 10 mass murderers

Conversely if I had 10 in my family, I'd kill 100 to save them. (Even the annoying wee ba..ards)

Who are the 10? How must I kill them? Will i face 10 murder convictions after?

Who are the 100? Are they fit and healthy?

"Who are the 10? How must I kill them? Will i face 10 murder convictions after?

Who are the 100? Are they fit and healthy? "

I'm gonna wait for the answers to these questions before answering.

There is no ifs and buts to the question, think of the utilitarian approach;

If there were a train track that had two paths, one path ran over 10 people and the other 100 - would you kill the 10 to save the 100?

I didn't know we had to drive the train. Why don't we just use the brakes then ?

Short answer, no, I would never kill ANYONE! I'm a nice chap with a kind heart.

Slightly longer answer, if I HAD, to kill 10 people, I would mainly beat them to death with a baseball bat.

Not really bothered about saving 100 people either way...

Paradise, Herts

This reminds me of an episode of hollyoaks years ago where a man with a gun, think it was a vicar, said she had to choose 2 of her children to die or he’ll kill all 5 of them. It stayed with me for ages. Had nightmares about it! I can’t imagine a worse situation.

Obviously there are many factors surrounding this OP and when it came to it I think most people would choose to save 100 lives for the sake of 10.

The bigger question is would you give up your own live to save them all?

We automatically do this anyway I think. If there are only two choices and only a split second to make those choices, we go for the one which will cause the least suffering.

like if there's a child in the road, I swerve, even if that means swerving into a deer. Because somewhere in my mind, I have already decided that children matter more than deer. The decision has already been made at a subconscious level.

If it's the trolley problem, then it's the 10 getting toasted. Less loss of life.

Slightly related, the good place does a great bit on the trolley problem. If you haven't watched it you should.

See this, best response yet! And I couldn’t agree more, we make decisions every day which elude to the same principe, we sacrifice one thing for another; whether we’re aware of it or not.

…now. Ask…

What if the track of 100 were all high ranking nazis?

What if the 100 were 99 children and Hitler?

Would it affect/alter your decision?

It’s an entirely different question. But I guess I started this to provoke thought. Nazi’s were brainwashed by a dictator, if Hitler didn’t exist would the ideologies he put forth and drilled into people were never screamed from a place of power - would that have changed history?
