I often say this but with a caveat. Take a look at someone like Best on YouTube, he's breathtaking.

Now remember he played in an era where with heavier footballs, rough pitches, defenders set out to injure him and he was a functioning alcoholic for some of his career.

Now place him in today's game with lighter footballs, better pitches, protection from referees. Had he joined Manchester United during Fergie's tenure he would have been shielded from the limelight and his partying possibly curbed.

Ronaldo and Messi wouldn't be getting near a Balon D'or.

He was the best player I ever watched live. Before those knee injuries he was something else.

Even after the injuries he was great but my god what a player.

He also provided the best redemption story in world football

George Best the most naturally gifed football of all time and in a period where football were heavy, boots had leather studs and tackles were tackles and he avoided most of them.

Best was a sublime player but outside of UK and Ireland he's rarely mentioned as one of the absolute greats, not least because he effectively retired at 27. Players such as Garrincha or Zico or Di Stefano were at least Best's equal in talent but hardly mentioned in the UK.

The holy trinity is Maradonna, Messi and Pele, imho.

I'd strongly recommend the film Maradonna which focusses on his peak years at Napoli. All the world's best players were in Italy then, the defenders were brilliant but brutal and Diego was still head and shoulders above the rest.

For me the best player there has ever been is Pele the skill, speed and awareness he had at that time in football was unbelievable.

But this is the thing about this question people will disagree with me.

In today's football for me it's Messi but I'm a Liverpool fan so that says it all

Maradona was a genius player. He's the only player credited with such a big hand in winning a country a world cup. He took a highly unfancied Napoli to the scudetto.

What boggles my mind is that he basically partied from Monday to Thursday, trained hard on Friday and Saturday, played a match on Sunday and repeated.

Paolo Maldini said the two toughest opponents he faced were Maradona and Ronaldo (the Brazilian)

Yeah his peak was short lived. But for 2-3 years at Barca he was unstoppable, and the most gifted controller of the ball I've ever seen, Messi being second. His entertainment value was beyond all others too, even to this day xx

Agreed, I loved watching him play with that big grin. Now and again I watch highlight reels on YouTube of him and he was phenomenal

"Diego maradona I’ve seen no other player control a ball like he could bearing in mind the era he played in when you could tackle imagine how good he’d be now with the protection flair players get now "
for a few years he was unplayable and I have said maradona has been the best. But CR and LM every minute that they play in every game is live or at least on camera
