Why I have never had head lice...

Or at least noticeably

You may have your own reasons for that too

But I know most of you would be lying

Mine: Hardly ever had longish hair

Please enter your own reasons why that dreaded affliction has NEVER visited you.

Absolutely - for many years kids were ostracised at school because people wrongly believed it had something to do with hygiene. Tea Tree oil works well as a prevention when added to normal shampoo and conditioner for anybody who has kids of school age.

This might be the reason why: African and Afro-Caribbean hair has a flattened-oval hair shaft, while mixed race and Caucasian hair has a more circular hair shaft. The head lice indigenous to Caucasian hair are not adapted to the flattened-oval hair shaft, so the lice are not able to take up home as effectively in African or Afro-Caribbean hair.

At college a rather scruffy young man said he didn't wash his hair often because he didn't want to catch head lice.

The reason people say this is because its harder for the lice to grip when hair is greasy, so they can lay on any hair but it's easier for them to spread on clean hair

Untreated, severe nit infestations can cause a child to become anaemic so it is potentially a serious issue.....

They don't like red hair it's more coarse than other hair so find it harder to stay in the hair to lay eggs.

Yes the adult lice, if left untreated, can be seen by the naked eye.

I saw one laying eggs on a child's hair I was standing behind in a queue in JD Sports once.

It was climbing side to side, attaching eggs to the hair. I think it might have been new to the hair as it was half way down the hair strands, not by the roots

Top tip for parents. Make a spray bottle of water, tea tree and neem oil and spray it on the hood and neck of your kids coat. It's the communal coat racks that transfer the lice. The spray acts as a detetorant.

I didn't go to primary school in the U.K. I never had lice.

I didn't react well to my daughter coming home with lice either but every other parent was relaxed

If my son gets lice it's all hair off getting through his fro with a nit comb is hell for both of us. Fortunately it hasn't happened in years. (She says on the first day back at primary school )

Be careful with Tea Tree Oil ...... it's strong and gives off a chemical type whiff......

NHS warn against anything that might irritate the scalp.

They advise that NO ONE and NO THING prevents headlice.

The best way is REGULAR wet or dry combing. So do that once a week say on a Sunday Night...... a bloody good nit comb through.

From the NHS ......

You cannot prevent head lice

There's nothing you can do to prevent head lice.

You can help stop them spreading by wet or dry combing regularly to catch them early.

Do not use medicated lotions and sprays to prevent head lice. They can irritate the scalp.

There's no need for children to stay off school or to wash laundry on a hot wash.

"I didn't go to primary school in the U.K. I never had lice.

I didn't react well to my daughter coming home with lice either but every other parent was relaxed

If my son gets lice it's all hair off getting through his fro with a nit comb is hell for both of us. Fortunately it hasn't happened in years. (She says on the first day back at primary school )"

Save his fro, I say have mercy on the kid!

That's interesting, our children have always had to stay off school until it was treated and I was told by a pharmacist a couple of years ago to boil all bedding and throws/cushions etc anywhere we sat basically.

"Hats off OP, this is most likely a brand new topic on fab It's a declaration of war

War on what? Lice? Now that I have finally seen an enemy in life worth fighting, then yes, it is a declaration of war on lice.

"

Good man OP, get that comb dug in

To say I've opened up a can of worms is kind of useless in this context!

Not really, it's not unheard of to get different information from different places. I tend to just do what I've always done as most will, it's not like headlice is a new thing.

I'm interested to know if your scratching reaction would be on your head only.
