Maybe it’s 5 mins walking. Maybe it’s 15 on a bike. Maybe you just walk around the shallow end of the pool for an hour. Everything matters and everything is worth it. Don’t be discouraged

"So... Off the back of THAT comment earlier I was actually inspired to finally try the weight training machines tonight (obvs had to look up YouTube tutorials on how to use them first lol). Pleased to report my big fat arse fits on all the ones I tried Plus I actually enjoyed it way more than the usual treadmill/crosstrainer combo. So thank you to whoever that troll was! " Late night session was it? Glad to hear you enjoyed it! (And that the report button works ) LvM

They’re just that much better Not even cardio for a warm up?? " You can do cardio to warm up, but honestly, you might even be better off doing a warmup on each resistance machine you use. For example, if I’m gonna squat I start off by doing body weight squats to warm up. Then I slowly add weight and do joint rotations like hip circles and side to side twists to get my body ready. You could do the same on a machine. Do 3 sets quite light, higher reps, before you do your main sets. I don’t think cardio is useless. It’s fantastic for cardiovascular health. But weights are what make you look better. And if you look better, you’ll go to the gym more often. You can do gym 5x a week for a year doing cardio and look exactly the same at the end. You can’t do that with weights

"And preferably cardio as far away from your resistance training if you really had to do it. So on a different day or later in the day for example. To warm up before resistance training, do some dynamic stretches and some lighter weight sets before your working sets." Thanks, will try this

You can’t do that with weights " The issue is that most people don't try hard enough with cardio. When we just run for exercise in between having a race/challenge to do our fitness pace and muscle tone drops right off even while maintaining a decent weekly mileage. Currently we're 9 weeks into a training plan that includes 1 session a week at either VO2 max or above lactate threshold, fitness has jumped, pace back up as fast as I've ever been and while my weight has barely changed at all there has been a definite physical change all while doing significantly less miles per week than earlier in the year. Sure you'll burn some calories and gain a bit of CV fitness doing 30 mins slow jog/swim/stair climb but those calories will be replaced easily with a quick snack on the way home. A 5 mile run with 10 x 2 mins at VO2 max pace will burn almost the same calories as a 5 mile jog chatting to your mate but will give a significantly different result. Mr

Mr" While I think your partly right that working harder = better results (duh?) I don’t think it applies directly across different people, and I still think a moderately difficult resistance training session is 100x better than basically any cardio in terms of improving your appearance Most people won’t do 10x2 at a decent pace, and the results aren’t going to be that impressive Most people absolutely can do 4x8-12 on 4-6 different machines across the gym and see phenomenal results

And while I appreciate the emphasis on health in general, the number 1 thing a person can do for their health is improve their body composition. So less fat, more muscle. Machines achieve both of those better than cardio ever could. Studies are now showing that most of the benefits we see from a healthier life style are directly caused by an improved body composition. Not to mention that people are far more likely to be consistent and work harder when results are coming. Weights really help that, cardio not so much

I'm just conscious of the fact that several members of my family have hereditary heart conditions and last month we unfortunately lost someone in my close family to cardiac arrest. It was totally unexpected as they were incredibly fit and healthy... So while I definitely want to increase my muscle mass, for the reasons above I also really want to focus my cardiovascular health too.

Mr While I think your partly right that working harder = better results (duh?) I don’t think it applies directly across different people, and I still think a moderately difficult resistance training session is 100x better than basically any cardio in terms of improving your appearance Most people won’t do 10x2 at a decent pace, and the results aren’t going to be that impressive Most people absolutely can do 4x8-12 on 4-6 different machines across the gym and see phenomenal results I did 4x12 on 3 different machines and 20 mins cardio, is that not enough then? Tbf I didn't feel that tired, was just getting too late. Also wouldn't say I'm totally motivated by appearance. More just general health and fitness. I wouldn’t say it’s not enough, I’d just think you’d do better by replacing the 20 mins cardio with more machines. You could easily hit 2-3 more machines in that 20 mins. Weights really help that, cardio not so much Yeah I get that. " Oh absolutely don’t neglect it, I’m just always trying to push the point home for 2 reasons 1. Most people have no idea how much more effective weights are body composition changes 2. Many new people put too much emphasis on cardio under belief that it “burns fat” which it just doesn’t. It’s not unusual to find people doing hours of cardio and seeing no results. 80/20 split seems to work best. 80% weights, 20% cardio, and don’t be fooled by this “hard cardio is best”. Studies again are showing that LISS cardio (low intensity steady state) is the best for general health. So that’s any cardio where you could still have a conversation while doing it
