I have a dilemma

I’ve been let down by work and I’m struggling to keep my home going ?

I will not claim benefits and I’m proactively looking for a better job !

But in the mean time has anyone ever taken a lodger?

How did you manage it ? What are the pitfalls I need to be aware of ?

Please any help would be gratefully received

Yes I've done that before. It can work and be worth while.

You can get lodger agreement forms online which outline the house rules etc and rent payment date you can both sign it.

1 thing factor in the gas and electric. I didn't at first and depending on the lodger they could use more than you do.

I've had a female and male lodger and both worked out well. We even built a friendship! Good luck

There's absolutely no shame in claiming benefits if you need them. Don't leave yourself in a negative situation because of pride.

As for the lodger thing if you own your property you may need to get permission from your mortgage lender.

You may also need to pay tax on any earnings but that will depend entirely on your situation.

If you do have a mortgage it's also worth talking to your lender, they may be able to assist with either a payment holiday or interest only or reduced payments for a while again depending on your situation.

If you currently live alone then you will lose the council tax single person discount

You'll also need to let your home insurance know as it may invalidate your policy if you dont

I had a lodger a few years back. I was lucky in that he was reliable, paid on time and didn’t make a mess. The only annoying thing he did was cook fish in the microwave and I bloody hate fish.

He stayed at mine Monday evening to Friday morning (he worked near me and he went home to his wife on Weekends).

I couldn’t have coped otherwise.

That said I’m not very sociable so if you are then it may work out better.

Him and his wife came and gave me and the house a once over before he moved in.
