It's to do with the order that the operators (+,-,x,/) should be applied.

In a sum like that, first you calculate anything in brackets. Then you do any exponents (such as squares, or roots). Next you do any divisions, then multiplications, then additions, then subtractions.

So, for 6-1x0+2/2 = ??

Division first 2/2 = 1

Then multiplication 1x0 = 0

So the sum becomes

6-0+1 = 7

Calculating the sum from left to right would give 1 as the result, but it's wrong because of the rules I described above, with certain operations always being carried out before others.

The way to remember the correct order which is taught in schools is usually either BODMAS or BEDMAS

Brackets

Exponents or Orders

Division

Multiplication

Addition

Subtraction

I heard this on the radio on the way home and came up with '1'. Simon Mayo said it was wrong. Just did the sum on my calculator and again the answer is '1'

5/0 on a normal calculator will return an error

Order of operations requires that multiplication and division be performed first.

6-(1x0)+(2/2)=7

I've added parenthesis to make the math a bit clearer.

6-(0)+(1)=7

And Voila, the answer is 7.

i suspect that's because you enter each operation linearly as you read it from the expression.... which does not take into account the order of precendence rules above....

.. .is that yawning I can hear from the back of the class.... see me after the lesson!

The sum contains 5 x 0, which is 0, not 5/0.

5/0 is infinity, which is why an error is returned.

I took it to be 5 being
