For some I guess it could be if that pet has been your only companion for many years but I also think you get over the loss of a pet quicker than you can the loss of a human companion/family

For me it was more traumatic the loss of my dog than the loss of my dad. Like yes I was bummed for my dad loads… but I don’t think I’ve cried so much like I did when I had to put my dog to sleep, and bury her… like I swear I cried for hours before when knowing it was her last few hours, and after..

I still can’t think about it …

I'd say losing a loved pet is the same as losing a person you're really close to...they're close companions just the same as people. I lost my childhood horse a few years ago and we'd had her for ages, I still miss her every day, she was my best friend

It all depends on what you have in life

If all you have is a pet then the live and bond is going to be greater than if you have a parter and / or family

I have had a few dogs and have been affected by different levels of grief when they have passed

But the loss of my parents is life changing

Surely it depends on the pet and the person.

If its a distant cousin three times removed versus the dog I'd had for 16 years who helped me get through one of the bleakest times of my life, then I was far more upset about my dog.

If it was my dad versus a hamster I had for less than 6 months before it had heart attack when I was 7 then clearly it's a very different scenario.

I don't think it's helpful to lay out hard and fast rules when it comes to feelings and emotion. They're complex things.

No, but they love unconditionally and they don't judge. Sometimes that's all that is needed and sometimes it's in very short supply from people.

They are there when I feel sad, we can hug them and I feel like they can try and cheer me up.. so don’t make fun of people who feel a connection with their pets.

Dogs are the ones who literally can give unconditional love…

Is the loss of a friend worse than the loss of a family member?

Their impact, influence and value they have had on your life dictates far more how hard their loss is than any other factor.

In my life currently there are very few people I would mourn the loss of more than my pets. If I didn't have those people, there is not a single person on this planet that I would mourn the loss of more than my pets.

I'll even push it and say yes, I value my pets lives more than anyone on this thread. If it means saving my pets or saving you, you best look elsewhere for help because you won't find it with me.

Depending on the bond you have loosing a pet or human can be hard.

One of our cats is already living on what I call borrowed time as I didn't expect him to do so well. He had a horrendous start in life and was neglected and mistreated.

He never left my side when I went through cancer treatment and is such a loving boy.

Every day we have him is a blessing but in our hearts we know the time will come sooner rather than later.

Wow!!! Lots of elderly people have cats or dogs as there only main companies for whatever reason maybe house bound, partners passed away whatever. Some elderly people can live very lonely lives with only a pet as company.

She’d been with me through an entire relationship so while sad it was something we got by, when her son died in my arms at the age of 9 during a seizure caused by a brain tumour it was devastating. 3 years on it still is. They were with me through all the mates who went off and had kids. The friends who got into drugs and the friends who simply never returned but the dogs were always there. Some of these comments the OP is making would have landed him on his arse had he made them to me during the time I lost my two. They were my kids and my support. It still sucks that I can’t come home from work and see someone happy to see me.

Damn sure I haven’t had that from a human

Honestly, I love my animals, and have an elderly doggo who is on borrowed time. I know her passing will be hard, she has been my constant companion for 14 years, and has saved my life more than once. I dread it.

I lost my Dad a few years ago, and we weren't particularly close, but it was devastating.

I have lost cats over the years and miss their little personalities too.

I would say so there has been a study recently that said that it’s just as traumatic an event as losing a loved one. In my opinion I think it is more than the same I have dog and the attachment we both have is incredible I have raised him from a puppy and he has shown me how animals are far great beings than humans the love and unconditional love they give back is incredible.

Often a pet can hit harder for a few reasons OP.

Firstly they a companion for sometimes the whole of their lives. They rely and depend on their owner and in return give unconditional love. Unlike hoomans who for all our efforts are naturally complicated.

Secondly pets can sense when we are feeling low and are there throughout those hard times without question. They never try to fix things or even ask us to talk about it. Just cuddles and the occasional lick on the face. Isn’t that what most of us want?

I love cats and dogs.

I have lost many cats to the road, injuries from fighting and sadly killed by other people.

I always get a new cat from the local cat home where I visit to feed, speak too and read a book with them.

I provide funding to the home where I can as they do a wonderful job re-homing cats who (after lockdown) have been dumped.

I build a close connection to any cat I take in. I give them lots of attention, a place in the house that is just for them and quality food.play fight regular and in return I get a lot of love back and a cat waiting on the doorstep for when I return.

Losing a cat for me is terrible they are part of the family. It takes me a few days then I go back to the cat home and look at the available cats. I feel I have to introduce a new cat fairly quickly so I can move on. New cat bed, new food bowls etc and start building a new relationship.

Animals are important and we must always show them love care and that they matter because they do support us without question.

Just to add, I worked with animals for many years and developed some very strong bonds with some of them. Even trying to maintain a professional distance, it was inevitable, and felt the loss of each keenly. But there was one that was special, and I still miss him.

I have had pets i have grieved over just as much as i have for a good friend.

My dog i have now is the very close and dear to me and i will be heart broken when the inevitable happens.

They become a part of our lives and are family.

From experience it can be just as difficult depending upon the unbelievable bond you've had with your pet because it becomes part of the family leaving fond memories

Depends on your connection to the animal. My staffie was like a daughter to me, she got spoilt rotten and when I lost her a month back it ripped something out of me.

My parents were very upset over losing their cat after 16 years. Hence I won't get one although there is a cat that's been visiting me for about 4 years most days.

I've cried at the loss of every one of my dogs, and over a few that passed through the rescue that I volunteered for...I've yet to cry over the death of a human. Does it hurt more or less? I don't know. It hurts differently. But I love my dogs differently to how I love humans...there aren't many humans that I'd protect with the ferocity that I would protect my dog.

How can you place a value on the loss of one life over another? I don’t think that’s possible. I lost both my parents and my special girl (my cocker spaniel) all in similar circumstances - after a period of prolonged illness. The difference was that I had to make the decision to let my girl go and it’s the hardest thing I have ever had to do. She was dependant on me to make a choice and although people were telling me it was the right one, I still feel like a murderer to this day. She was a precious soul. More precious to me than many people I’ve met in my life. To deny the bond that can and does exist between human and animals would

yes thats true.

but i think with some people man and women they can decide not to seek company in another human so prefer pets.

many single women i know have dogs, they out walking them some every carrying them like a handbag.

some just get to a point in life that will do for them.

i do get a lot of pleasure visiting the cat home and sitting down with a book reading to the cats.

some may think this is crazy behaviour, it maybe. but you should see them all rush to be first to get the lap or best position. they all lay around sometimes looking up at you and its great.

its no wonder cat cafes are popular places with many having to be booked in advance
