So last week me and a friend both applied for a job in Switzerland(we're both electricaians). To cut a long story short. We received confirmation of the job Saturday and now they needed confirmation from us that we are totally still committed. Unfortunately events have changed, now we're told that some men may have to share a room. Now that has really changed things. So after speaking to a few friends we all came to the same conclusion, 'absolutely no way do any of us want to be sharing a room. Don't get me wrong I most probably wouldn't mind at all if it was a girl, who was cute, single and obviously loves pleasure and she finds me cute and vice versa.

Why? It is a means to an end and it will only be short term

My son landed his dream job in Edinburgh and had to relocate, work offered him a flat and he had to share with others who who were starting work with him, he didn't mind it as it meant he wasn't alone and it meant that he already knew someone in the office.

He was only there for a month until he found his own place

Sometimes you got to do what you got to do.

I’m an electrician and whenever I’ve worked away have always shared because JIB don’t pay enough to lodge alone,,, sharing has never been a problem for me although I do understand you wanting a room to yourself

Most companies will expect you to share a room if they are paying you to be there. Not sure what the big deal is forces you share unless you an officer.

Over the years I have shared with guys, girls, TVTS' it never bothered me unless you need the loo and you can't get in the bathroom.

There are my stories can tell about sharing a room ... but I don't see what the issue is ... if your sure and confident about your sexuality

Is it because 'A' some of us require an awful lot of time for personal needs and will be quite noisy? Or after working 12 hours a day a bit of personal space is invaluable?

I can see issues. I'd hate it. I like privacy and alone time at night. I'd seriously consider turning down a job if I had to share a room. I've turned down weekends sway with friends because we would have been sharing hotel rooms.

I do like my own space and privacy but that’d be with either sexes regardless. Not like, I wouldn’t share with a woman but I would share the room with a cute boy.

It’s pretty common for works to do shared rooms. Mine always did, but were also happy if you wanted to pay the single supplement to have the room to yourself.

Yep standard practice, if you ever listen to footballers they often share rooms for away matches etc.

When I'm away on golf weekends with friends it is standard to share double rooms.

Just go enjoy the experience of working abroad would be my advice

The choice is a simple one then. If the job will cause you personal inconvenience, don't go. If this is a contract role and you are being paid some form of premium, you could consider going halves with the employer to get a room to yourself. As other posters have said, the employer only has to provide accommodation which they are doing

I was asked some years ago to share with a female colleague and I refused point blank.

When on company business you have to stay away overnight, there is no question that you need some time and privacy away from the job and that includes single accommodation.

It's no big deal. We've all done it when we've been away with mates and wanted to save money. Just be considerate, arrange different times to use bathroom in the morning/evening, leave the room to the other person for their private time and vice versa.

My mantra is that when on business I expect basic comforts being met - it does not include champagne breakfast but it will as a non-negotiable, include the privacy of my own room.

It is interesting perspective from some of the posters, but experience of travelling all over the world for many years with women - they are much less fussy about sharing rooms than guys are - in fact that is often a prerequisite for them - as long as they like each other that is.

I guess it is down to guys wanting to watch porn and having a wank.

WiFi 23:00-00:00 is porn time in hotels when the guys get back to their room after being in bar or pub as the WiFi grinds to a halt

Well Silky Sally some times things work out some times they don't. That's contracting for you. And if things don't work out (not just room mates, ect) you can at least call it a loss and go back home. But when you're 1000's of miles away and with travel not being as simple prior to covid, distance makes a huge difference. And this has happened in the past. Fortunately very rare.

As you're a contractor, you have the choice whether to accept or refuse the terms offered by the client. From your comments and responses it sounds like a "no thanks" would be best and look for a UK based contract that better suits your circumstances. I regularly turn down contracts that don't tick my boxes.

Okay if the job was a few day's(maximum 2. 5), then I'm okay sharing. But anymore than 3 days and I absolutely need space. I'm sorry but I make an awful lot of noise and there's vibration and movements that's not just for hours but through the night and morning.
