protect your family, partner, friend, colleague?

Can you be too loyal? Can loyalty be blind?

I'm fiercely loyal to loved ones so I probably would go too far, although hard to say exactly without an example.

The right place

That’s a tricky question. I’m loyal to my friends but i wouldn’t protect them if they abused others.

Paradise, Herts

I’m very loyal yes. Only to a few though. Could get onto dodgy ground this thread! So I’ll just say yes I would probably do anything to protect my children.

Loyalty can absolutely be blind.

It takes a lot to gain my loyalty/trust but if you have it then it's absolute. Whatever needs to be done is done without question.

Missin’ Yo’ Kissin’

Certain family members - definately, cos thet are blood. Ends of the earth stuff - yes!

Very close friends - I trust them, they trust me - yes!

Don't have a partner?

I suppose if you looked up to them and hero worshiped them then yes, you could be a bit loyal.

I don't hero worship cos they can let you down! After all they are only human.....

My partner and my children I would protect from nearly everything.

Our daughter did something fairly bad once (not criminal) and ran away probably the single most frightening experience of our lives. She called me at work just before and I had a gut feeling that there was a big problem. I told her then "I will get between you and trouble" I meant it then and I still do. This doesn't mean I'd cover up a crime for them but it does mean I'd face whatever was happening with them.

I am loyal, but not a scumbag. I wouldnt do a boris and get an address for a friend who was insulted so they could go beat the person up.

I always get consent before being loyal too, sometimes being loyal means just sitting with someone who was assaulted, and not running out and buying a baseball bat and a balaclava.

Do not let other people's problems become your problems.

Stay away from people who make poor life choices.

Or they will use your friendship to constantly bail them out.

That’s hard to agree with if those people are your growing children?

Good thread Op. another interesting and thought provoking one.

I suppose it depends on the person, I’m very loyal to my children, but not to the point where I’ll defend them if they do something sill, because I don’t think that’s helpful.

I’m loyal to my friends, and am authentic with that, if that make sense.

Alicante, Spain. (Sometimes in Wales)

Loyalty is super important, but blind loyalty isn't always in the best interests of the person you are being loyal too, or indeed yourself.

And of course, most of us have competing loyalties. You can't sacrifice yourself for one if that leaves another two or three exposed.

Really interesting points here - I think I would be/ am loyal to my children and would always come between them and any trouble. My loyalty would not be blind but unconditional.

Friends and family? The same really, loyalty is one of the most important values in my world, probably because "family" per se is massively important to me.

The Town by The Cross

I'm loyal to what is 'right' in my view.

I'm fully supportive of my children but wouldn't support any kind of action that that went against my moral compass....

Interesting you said "moral compass" rather than the law. If I am reading this right, I would subscribe to that rather than the law, too.

I think that you already know the answer to that one as far as my mum is concerned, having taken on the NHS over DNR by threatening them with a judicial review. Not to mention that I actually took on South Wales police a few years ago, leading to five court appearances, and defeated them when they tried to fit him up for an offence that he did not commit. I could hog the thread over corners I fought on behalf of family and friends, and won! XX

I think loyalty can be very blind. I’m loyal to my close friends and family, but not at the expense of common sense.

Your loyalty to you mum is truly amazing and personally. I think in that respect you are a role model.

Not commenting on other things, mind ...;-)

Different environments warrant different forms of loyalty in my opinion, family is a no brainer, then friends/colleagues etc, even people I don't like but work with are still going to get a form of loyalty.

The ground will dictate.
