Art was the only lesson I looked forward to and was incredibly talented at, PE I didn’t look forward to, but I was a gifted athlete, still am.

My favorite subject was probably art.

I hated school. I went to four different high schools and ended up finishing at a hospital school as my mental health was completely fucked up due to bullying and home life. I think I had around 18 months of education in my teenage years.

I was quiet and a good pupil, never caused any trouble. I just wish I was strong enough back then to put my head down and concentrate on studying.

Don’t beat yourself up, it sounds like you did well to get through all that, and it’s so hard as a teenager to have the strength to deal with it

I loved pottery and was good at it but gave it up when we had to pick options for what I thought would please my parents. My pottery teacher took to one side to ask me to reconsider as I had talent and my parents true to type never gave a shit about what I did in school. I hated school but I was bright and well behaved.

I hated school and it hated me unfortunately. Later in life I went to college then uni. Found out I'd had/have a few barriers, shall we say. Also found out I liked maths, history and English. Think I was just unlucky that not one teacher picked up on any of it.

I could take or leave school. I loved college and uni, but i dont recall my school days with fondness. I loved Geography - it helped that we had a young teacher who must have been around 24/25 looking back, who used to wear low cut tops. I liked PE as most lads do, then had quite a talent for graphic design.

School was mostly horrendous. Kids in that artificial environment with minimal supervision and hundreds of others of exactly the same age tend to really shitty behaviour. Coupled with an obsolete one-size-fits-all education system designed to produce compliant workers I feel it's well past its usefulness.

I enjoyed school, good job as I went to quite a few and lived in my final one. Favourite lessons were geography, history, biology and PE. If you didn’t like PE you’d struggle as we had it four days a week all afternoon. I always wanted to do chemistry and DT but girls weren’t allowed.

Detention we didn’t have, as had homework for 2-3 hours in class in the evenings, so no room for it. Instead you’d get demerits or instant weekend lockdown, which is basically in full uniform all weekend and reporting to the duty teacher every 30 minutes. I spent one whole term doing this. Was I a bad kid, not really, a lot of ‘association’ demerits with my best friend even if I wasn’t there, or a lot of what was deemed as back chat, but in my mind I just wanted a straight, logical answer to something not a ‘just because’ one. Did get suspended once in my final year, for drinking at 16, 2 weeks in school and 2 weeks at home.

The worst punishment I got was from my Biology teacher in my last year. I hadn’t completed my homework so he put me on an exercise bike in corridor just before break and made me cycle for them nimutes as everyone else walked past

I really loved school and there was no subject I hated. I loved the social part of school, seeing my friends on a daily basis and only got a handful of detention over the years. I guess, we would not have dared to cause too much upheaval as we genuinely respected our teachers. That said, I did not go through the British education system, so cannot comment on that.

I liked most stuff. I like learning to this day, no matter what the subject. Apart from geography. I hated geography. I did get a couple of detentions and a couple of suspensions

but I did alright out of it in the end, that was just a little blip lol

School was a mixed bag for me. Up until year 9 I hated it as was bullied frequently for being hyperactive and taking medication to control it plus teachers just labelled me as naughty and kept kicking me out of class.

Got to GCSE time and knuckled down, tried really hard to shake the stigma that had become attached to me and discovered a love of history, baking and reading.

Wanted to do food tech but was told I wasn't allowed as I was a boy (no I'm not making that up, word for word what I was told).

I have found over the years that I am hugely interested in academic subjects but don't have the concentration to sit in classrooms so I just buy the books on subjects I'm interested in and learn at my own pace

I enjoyed Comp. Some of our teachers were great characters and I loved English and English Lit. I also enjoyed History. I look back on those days with happy nostalgia.

Primary School not so much as I had a teacher there who was very unpleasant.

I mostly enjoyed school. I lived a few miles from my secondary school which meant I didn’t socialise with many of my school friends outside of school which meant I always felt a bit of an outsider. I was good most subjects including science and maths so got pushed in that direction. I would have liked to also taken a more creative subject too.

I rarely had detentions, only whole class ones, which as others have said always felt unjust.

Loved Physics and Chemistry, liked CDT and IT, and Art was OK. Fairly neutral(ish) about everything else overall, except RE which was a waste of time and PE which was mostly shit as it revolved around football and gymnastics (hate the former, crap at the latter).

Got detention a couple of times, but mostly one of the good kids.

Got picked on a fair bit as I wasn’t one of the cool kids/loudmouthed gobshite like most of the lads.

I got detention on purpose when it was bad weather out, cause got to stay inside in the detention room when everyone was sent out to the yard.

worst day of my life when teacher figured it out and threathned me with punishment as a break in the yard twice as long in the rain, and i had to run around saying I will be good and obeying the rules for the day.

Overall I enjoyed school. My favourite classes were English literature, history, chemistry, French, German and PE.

In primary school I was always well behaved. First year of secondary school I was good as gold. During second and third year I had quite a few detentions including a few Saturday detentions, I was on behaviour report a few times, I'd a few suspensions and came within a whisker of expulsion.

From fourth year on I grew up. I won't I never got into any more trouble but it was minor by comparison.

What type of education system would be better?

Something more flexible to the individual's needs. It's well known that those who are autistic in particular are regularly failed by the school system and make up a large percentage of our home education community. I think child-led learning along the lines of unschooling as practiced by home educators, or something along Scandinavian lines for those who need their children to be in school. Something that emphasises the child's interests and allows them to learn core subjects while pursuing those interests. More respect needs to be given to children's need to move often, and I think they should have the opportunity to spend much more time outside.

I was good at English (despite being dyslexic) History, Geography and the Sciences, Chemistry and Biology being my favourites, loved messing with potassium permanganate and cutting up body parts.

I loved Art and Drama.

Shocking at Maths. Good at PE though I didn't like it but was forced on to the netball team because of my height.

Loved swimming

I pretty much enjoyed School and wish I could have that time again and try a little harder. Still love learning, you just never stop

I loved school. I did well and didn't get into trouble except for one minor incursion where it was a prefect who doled out the punishment for his own ends; it was a fine of 50 pence (apparently, worth £1.75 now)!! It was supposed to go into a fund donated to charity at the end of term but we were sure most of it went to the prefects' beer fund!

Favourite subject was History. Did not particularly enjoy art despite the teacher keeping it interesting with glass etching and such.

Whilst I was never bullied at my all-boys school, my biggest regret is that I did not challenge it when I saw it and much to my shame, even thought some of it was warranted when a boy didn't quite fit in because he was 'homesick for mummy'. The idea was 'shut up and get on with it, you sissy.'
