So saw some guy post something on insta complaining to women about lip fillers and how common (called it a pandemic) it has become nowadays and if someone’s gonna do something about it lol

I mean surely if it’s something that make us girls (or boys) feel good why not?

Which is the most important thing, feeling good with ourselves ..

I consider myself lucky I’m happy with my lips as they are , they are natural and I used to hate how big they were compared to other girls, but anyway.

If I had thin lips and wanted them bigger why not give them a little plump?

Some People seem to be so judgemental especially when it comes to anything to do with the exterior deeming it vanity or saying look it looks awful (I mean some are car crashes but again, so long as they feel amazing!!)

I've noticed a lot of men getting lip fillers too.

To my eyes the badly done ones look unnatural. I assume I don't notice the well done ones. However my very thinly plucked eyebrows in the 70s looked pretty unnatural too

I see your point and I guess I’m more of the thought anything but in moderation… and if there’s little to no ethics then yeah. I could be moderate but some might not be and go do injections from someone who just learnt how to use a needle

As a society we have to balance letting people do what makes them happy and also protecting people from themselves in certain situations

It’s very easy, and very cool, and very hip, to take your stance on it and just be like “yeah don’t judge whatever makes you happy brooooo”.

What’s not very easy is balancing that with all the negative aspects of the thing in question

How educated are people about the procedure?

How responsible are people in knowing when enough is enough?

Do people offering this service get held to any standard? Both from a medical and ethics standpoint?

Do people have access to proper mental health services where they can figure out if this actually makes them happy or if they are putting a plaster over a bigger issue?

There’s so many we need to ask on this side. And it’s like I said above. You’ve literally picked the easiest stance on this, because no one can really disagree with “do what makes you happy”. But that kinda thinking is harmful and irresponsible if we don’t have the above questions, and many more, answered

Overall I'd say yes, if it makes the individual happy. My only real concern is, it's practiced by unqualified people who do not follow ethics and have little understanding of the dangers involved. Taking advantage of people with only their own interests at heart, along with no thought for the mental health of their "patients".

I think people should do what makes them happy. But I also think it's a shame that so many people feel they have to have surgery done to 'improve' themselves when they were probably beautiful already to those who matter. Sometimes, we're enough as we are!

I worry about the pressure this places on young people.

But nor would I want to deprive someone of surgery if it was going to help their self confidence a lot.

It's a balance I guess, I'm a little torn on the matter!

I have no problem with people choosing to have lip fillers or any other cosmetic treatments or surgery.

The results might not be a look I personally like, but as long as they are happy, that's all that matters.

However, I do think that there needs to be a lot more regulation of cosmetic procedures.

I believe that the U.K. is the only country that doesn’t regulate the cosmetic surgery and beauty industry. Any surgeon is allowed to do cosmetic surgery, in other countries they have to have extra courses and experience.

Anyone can go on a couple of hours course, even just online, and then set up to do fillers and Botox- it should be stopped and regulated so that only people with the proper level of skills and knowledge are allowed to practise.

To be fair I did see a report on tv that you can go on a course for fillers and some trainees were pretty crap and I think it didn’t even take that long to be able to then do it to people. Which is totally wrong in my opinion

Definitely should be a thing only for surgeons who have expertise in the field

And that I’d trust them with my life not to do a botched job

that tv show, Nip and Tuck, does anyone remember it?

True but you're 31, I'm talking about the pressure that teen-agers might feel because so many people around them and in the public eye are changing themselves. I wonder if kids have the maturity to realise they don't have to change.

Also I see why teens can feel the immense pressure being showed Tik toks and insta of girls who basically look a 15/10 every time x hence why I try to avoid now as it’s depressing lol

I would like to see more regulation around the practices who carry out the procedures. Maybe that and counselling so people can thoroughly explore the reasons why they feel the need for it.

For someone with body dysmorphia it can be a dangerous path.

There was a good discussion on LBC a couple of weeks back about the lack of regulation, training and safety protocols in place at a lot of venues performing these practices.

People can put and inject whatever they want into them in the search for an unobtainable look IMO

Like I’d love to look like Jennifer Lawrence but surely a surgeon would tell me it’s impossible .

I'm thinking of opening up my shed oooops I mean home office for minor procedures. I watched a couple of YouTube videos and everything. Satisfaction guaranteed. No job too small.

Mine have never looked odd, the filler is absorbed so gradually that it’s not something that’s noticeable.

I believe Lesley Ash had permanent lip implants as opposed to filler.

I think it is down to expectation and perception. Though anyone has a right to do to their body whatever they wish, I find it sad that society is portraying images of what some think is expected. The idea of 'I must look like that' model / person, I get, but taking it one step further back, where do the models / persons in media think they are perceived as normal with fillers, etc.

Maybe fillers etc are the new normal.

It's a strange world, but all to their own.

What I don't like about the lip-filler trend is the artificial ridge it creates above the lip (presumably when done badly). It seems like the end result is engineered to look good on selfies taken from a certain angle but it falls down in real life.

My sister used to binge eat and throw up, to make herself stay slim and keep herself happy.

We do things that make us happy that are not always good for us.

If the fillers aren't damaging the people, and they are reversible, then it's not my shout to say don't do it.

I do think there's a bit of an identikit thing going on, especially with younger women. They all dress the same, get their lips done the same, botox and filler, hair extensions, they all look a bit like clones with no individuality.

All a bit boring.

Must make them happy though.

Can look rough the next day with no make up on though, some look like they've been in a punch up their faces look so swollen.

Think the key with surgery and procedures is less is more.

Not my face, not my place, I know.

If people want it done then that’s up to them it’s there body and if they like it that’s all that matters

For me I chose a alternative lip plumper that do the same job but aren’t really that permanent

Lips back to normal within 3-4 hours

Works well for a meet

Personally, a little plumping is ok, but when a person gets so much filler that it makes their lips look like a sink plunger, that's a little too far. That said, it's their bodies and money, but I always think about the Bride of Wildenstein.

I've seen some very pretty young women completely ruin their faces by jumping on this particular bandwagon. Not that they'd care what I think when their equally pumped up lip friends are all telling them how amazing it looks on their Instagram selfies, but it's a no from me.

But I mean, if you don’t abuse it sometimes it can be very effective and I’ve seen such improvements for people making little tweaks and corrections x

I'm torn on this.

I do think we should do what makes us happy. But then on the other hand, I do think a lot of women, especially younger girls give in because of pressure from society and how easily available it is these days for such a small price tag.

I live next to a high street and there's about six beauty bars on one road who do lip fillers. You can just book in and have it done at the click of a finger.

I always think it's a little sad to see people lose their original features and blend into thousands of others, but I totally get it.

I wouldn't tell anyone not to do it if it was what they wanted. But yeah, I'm definitely in two minds about it.

I'm all for people doing what they want with their bodies. But I'm also concerned about the peer pressure especially for younger women to conform to a certain look.

To me I find that there's an even bigger rush for youngsters to look like adults, and that bothers me.

I think that the age limit should be 18 same as tattoos. I feel 16 is too young.

I do like drawing my lip .. like its very subtle and it is tracing my natura lips, I know some women do go over their lips .. which .. well .. not gonna express my opinion

It was 16 just doubled checked it is being raised to 18 this year. There were numerous cases of under 16 year olds having it done.

And I guess this is my problem with it, at the age of 16 yes I cared what I looked like but I was totally still in my experimental phase, the photos

But I grew my own style over the years and had fun even though I had some disasters. To me fashion should be fun and I sometimes think teenagers miss out on that experience. Even the edgy tattooed young adults all look the same. So it's not about a certain look I think it's a generational thing.

I naturally have quite thin lips and it's not something I would personally do. I sometimes wish I could have more full lips to apply lipstick but mostly I just couldn't be bothered with the upkeep and cost of fillers

. I personally don't understand the hate. I suspect that some look at people who go to extremes with it and think that's typical but don't realise they probably know loads of people with subtle fillers. People probably reacted negatively when people first started dying their hair but it's normal now so people aren't that bothered by it.

Yeah a lot of its genetics. My nan had amazing skin for her age despite being a smoker. My mum has always looked young for her age even though she didn't even buy foundation until she was in her 40s. I hope I've got the same genes! I still get mistaken for a university student so hopefully

It's the attitude of judgement that is the issue in the first place. It's a major factor in why people have these feelings of inadequacy.

In an ideal world, everyone would be content within themselves, as they are, regardless of their 'flaws'.

Lip fillers and other forms of plastic surgery aren't going to solve the underlying issues but if they can give someone a lift (Punintentional) then I don't see the problem.

Like anything, it can be misused and become somewhat of an addiction, but that won't be the case for everyone.

Again, their body, their choice.

Initially i was going to say the fad of oversized lips is ridiculous, most guys laugh about it...however having read some comments i think i would of made an error on passing my judgement so quickly...

I take pride in my appearance, i even pluck my eyebrows...so actually..if it makes the owner of the lips feel good then fair play...and good luck to you...

Correction according to “ beauty standards” which in my opinion exist. Which a lot of it is in the symmetry btw

I need my nose corrected as I hate it, on the side (u don’t notice as much from front) it slightly has a tiny bump so I’d like to correct that and have it straightened/Arch down and feminised.

It is a correction, not vital, obviously but I’ve always felt insecure about it so x I do it for myself only btw not because some twat said … “ ur fucking nose is disgusting “

But perhaps we should question the society we have created where people willingly undergo invasive procedures to achieve validation from social media likes?

If people are doing this to conform to societal norms, surely their bodily autonomy has been subverted by internalising such standards?
