Because rats are associated with disease, sewers, rubbish etc, whilst squirrels are not.

In Germany there are Red squirrels which are actually black. Quite striking when you first see them.

So a rodent with a long bald tail is repulsive but if it has a fluffy tail then it's adorable ?

Go to Kielder near the Scottish border. That's where I managed to see one. Greys carry diseases that kill Reds

but rats have fur too!!

Trust me squirrels are vicious little fuckers same as rats can be.

I do think the reasons rats are disliked more is because they are known to carry diseases that are more transmitable to us. Plus they are alot more likely to encroach into our living spaces in search of food. They probably have had an image problem since the black plague

I know what I mean by that is

It’s a perception off or childhoods and childhood cartoons and such

Like Chip and Dale

Or the chipmunks I know they now a squirrel but as a kid they were the same thing

Most off what were teached as “ acceptable ” stems from or childhoods

I love both. I have rats and people who meet them, they don't like the tails and fear getting bitten. But rats are actually very gentle. (Not your wild rat. I got bit by one) I've had quite a lot of rats as pets and never been bitten. They are super cute.

Squirrels are outdoorsy. They collect food to see them through the winter. They look clean.

Rats look filthy. They live in sewers. Be scavenging in dustbins. They also will try to live in your personal surroundings. Carry disease.

Rats give me the heebie jeebies.

Yes it doesn't make sense. It just is.
