Sarcastic Friend

Your friend has a great sense of humour. However, sometimes their jokes involve making fun of others in inappropriate ways. They will point out a physical flaw or look for something odd or different about a person and make an unkind comment. You feel uncomfortable when your friend does this. Do you say something or just laugh along with them?

I'd say something.

Before I wish I did after my friend is punched I'm the face for offending someone

Say something. Maybe start softly, say, 'bit harsh' or something similar. Slowly call them out on it

If it was me, I'd say something. Just because you find them funny most of the time it doesn't give them the right to make you or others feel uncomfortable x

Somewhere In The Ether…

I’d tell them that they were being needlessly cruel.

I very much draw the line in people picking fun of a persons physical characteristics which they cannot change.

If it's making you feel uncomfortable then definitely say something so your friend is aware how their humour can at times making you feel.

Am sure a friend would never want to make you feel that way.

How does the recipient take it, do they view it as 'bantahhh'? Or is it behind their back?

Seems pretty juvenile. Remember my friends from school used to be like that. Was fine when we were stupid school kids.

But when they were still doing it 5 years later, I moved on from that friendship group.

I don't find that kind of thing funny and I'd put an end to it immediately. It's not even like it's an innocent throwaway comment, it just sounds cruel and personal which makes it even worse. I could kinda laugh it off if it was just random nonsense, but knowing they are purposely picking apart someone and laughing at them seems really shitty and not funny in the slightest.

It's much easier to put down others rather than improve yourself. I know people like this and it stems from insecurity.

I would tell them it made me uncomfortable. It’s toxic behaviour, and not something I’d want to be part of.

My friends aren't arseholes.... which is why they're my friends.

And if they did, I wouldn't find them funny, but cruel. And they wouldn't be my friends.

One or two times... I'd just joy laugh. Most people with a good sense of humour can guague when and why a joke fails.

If it's more frequent I'd not stop saying they'd have a great sense of humour ... And like this say I'd call them up on it and aay it's not cool.

Also, my response would likely change on context and who else could hear.

It’s bullying. Not cool, whether you’re 5 or 50. I’d not be able to keep quiet. Kindness, manners and courtesy cost nothing. The world would be a much nicer place if people would just use a bit of empathy, or think before they speak.

Turn it back on them. In a good humoured way make fun of them, maybe say 'mr/Mrs perfect over here with your perfect [insert physical feature they ridiculed]. You must have so many blue ribbon for your perfect x'

Say it with a smile.

I'd say something too. My best friend and I have quite strong differences of opinions on some things. I make it clear when they are making me uncomfortable with what they're saying and it's sometimes a case of "we'll have to agree to disagree, but stop taking about it too".

If it's done quietly so I'm the only one who hears, I'd laugh at them and return fire.

"You're poking fun of her dress when you're wearing THAT shirt??"

If it's loud enough for the target to hear, or other people, I'd call them out on that shit. I get no enjoyment being in the company of people looking to start fights.

My friends and I will happily take the piss out of each other, but it's done with love and not to tear each other down.

I wouldn't be friends with someone who routinely behaves like that. If a friend did start saying cruel stuff I'd say it made me feel uncomfortable and try to establish whether there was something going on in their life that made them feel like they needed to lash out.

It would be really unusual behaviour among my friends, so it would stand out a mile.

I think I would be inclined to point out that none of us is perfect. If you look at someone long enough, you will find flaws. Whilst they are casting the judgement of their opinion on others. How would they like it if others were judging them?

I wouldn't so much laugh with them but at them and in turn retaliate towards them with a sarcastic quip of my own... if it was continued and meant with malice then that friendship would be questioned... life is too short to be nasty
