Around 30 pilot whales are stranded on the beach near Anstruther where I walk my dogs. There are believed to be about 17 dead, 12 are still alive but rescuers think only about nine will survive long enough to be re-floated once the tide comes in.

We had a whale stranded down in Cornwall just a few weeks back and was advised that it was put to sleep and taken back out to sea.. really really sad

It's always sad when these wonderful creatures find themselves out of their element and stranded.

It always makes me wonder what they know that we don't? Was there underwater testing going on somewhere? Something must be going on for the whole pod to put themselves in danger.

It's very hot here and they have put windbreaks round the whales to try and shade them from the sun.

High tide isn't till after 4pm. rescue teams have got big air-bag type floats to help get them back into the water but it is a very high rocky part of the beach they are on.

they continue to try bathing the whales with sea water just now.

It's so sad when this happens to such lovely creatures!! It does make you wonder if they know something we don't, and what makes them head for shore? Hope they do manage to save some

They keep turning one whale back into the water here and at the other end of Anstruther there are over 20 still in the water, waiting.

Some neighbours and I are making up sandwiches and flasks for the rescue workers here, and handing out bottles of water. There are firemen, police, coastguards, divers as well as the animal welfare teams.

It's been a long day and will be an even longer night for them all.

They have managed to refloat about nine I think, but they have just come into Pittenweem harbour now. I hope they can get them to go back out to sea.

They can't always stop them returning. It is so sad when they do that.

We hate anything like this, it must be soul destroying for the rescue workers when they keep returning.

Its hard to understand how such intelligent creatures do such suicidal things.

Hopefully the other 24 of their pod which were offshore about three miles along the coast will come and lead them back out to sea.

Seriously, I do think they know things that we don't. So much of Earth is water but we know more about outer space than the deep sea.

if you want to start a theory how about this.

A navy has a device which is dropped to the bottom of the ocean.

then it sends out a pulse which triggers a tsunami which sends wave after wave of water to flood out the enemy and destroy the infostructure.

then makes serious capital by helping that country rebuild.

would that be to far fetched to be untrue.a weapon which could cause massive damage with no blame attached but mother nature?

but as for the whales im sure something isnt right here. maybe they are being driven into dangerously lower waters because of trawlers and the rish of being caught.

i dunno, but its sad.
