I've done this thread before but the forum members change all the time so sorry to the long term users..

When you read a thread or a post from a user, do you often associate them with a voice or a dialect?

If you have just been to the beach party were you surprised/shocked when you heard people's voices for the first time?

I often read profiles and can see where a person's location is, but sometimes i feel its almost the wrong location for them and imagine them with a different accent. Im just odd me thinks lol

I am not very good at placing accents. I can tell if someone is scottish, Irish, welsh, southerner, northerner and brummie, but that's about it.

Personally I don't, Sassy - but then I have lived in many different parts of the UK and abroad and a lot of my friends come from an area/ country that they no longer live in so I am used to that discrepancy. Also you have a lovely vivid imagination - so perhaps that is part of it? Just a thought.

It's not a strong Scottish accent, I moved south nearly 9 years ago. It's a bit warmer lol

Its just the authority thing, never seen what she looks like either but i have a mental image too. I was shocked to see Granny Crumpet with an avatar showing long gorgeous blonde hair as i truly thought she was a typical 'granny' type that knitts blankets and has a purple rinse and curlers lol

I don't really think about accents that much but some people are surprised when they meet us that we don't speak with a Birmingham accent. That is because neither of us originated from Birmingham. I don't know what or if I have an accent but people always say that I speak rather eloquently. That may be because I am used to speaking in public and training staff etc.

I was sent to school here when I was 14, and the first thing my EFL teacher said to me was to advise me that in order get ahead, I would need to speak properly, and strongly advised to get rid of my accent.

I guess I managed that, as well as to learn how to make beds properly, to make small talks, and how to behave properly.

Those 4 years in private education was money well-spent by my parents afterall!

Nah i'm just being cruel!! It's no where near 'Jethro' quality!!

I always insist on telling people I sound like Pasquale crossed with Beckham!

Find it's always a pleasant suprise for them when they hear me speak for real!

Ha! Considering i've been here 6 months - i'll forgive you!

And i've never really stayed anywhere long enough to pick up an accent - London, Bristol, Cheltenham, Birmingham, Australia, Hong Kong, Northampton - not one has stuck yet!! Although these days if I spend a while working or living in the same place for a few weeks - I do start mirroring the locals!

Im not put off by accents...If I am put off face to face it is due to something else.

I wouldn't not meet someone just because of an accent...Its just very hard not to judge what someone is like when all you get is their voice....Hence no phone call before meet...
