I've never been to one and there seem to be none on the south coast.

So my question is, have you ever been to an organised social? If so, what did you think of the experience? What were the highlights? Were there any disappointments?

Been to the Bristol one. It was fun, albeit reminded me a little of going out on the pull... A few groups of people who clearly new each other, and a few like us who were having to initiate conversations with new ppl.

All on all, I'd say yes. If/when doing it again I'd probably try and arrange to meet ppl or say hi via fab first.

Deepest darkest Peru

I’ve travelled across the country from Newcastle to Heathrow to attend them and never had a bad experience, always enjoy them and made some lifelong friends

Not disappointments per se.

In terms of the positives, I've really enjoyed them. It's definitely a no pressure environment, it's enjoyable meeting a wide range of people, interacting with people whose posts you've read, who have different backgrounds. I love putting faces and voices to profile names. And people watching! The dynamics, the different social groups. It's fascinating.

Yes I have. I had a great time! Highlights were the cake and all the fabulous friends I made. It was cool to see the real people behind the profiles. Dissapointments were there being too many people to have any hope of speaking to everyone

This is interesting. I imagine that it might be a little awkward showing up alone if a lot of the other guests already know each other. Perhaps going with one or two others is a good way to approach it the first time

I can't talk about one of the lows because I quite enjoy posting on here.

Perhaps people talk about the positives because they have had only positive experiences? I've heard of a couple of them being rather cliquey but the ones I've attended I've spoken to a range of people and not just those I've spoken to before. I think that it's natural people will gravitate towards those feel they comfortable with but I also think that people can be quite welcoming if the effort is made to talk to others.

I went to my first and second on my own and was really welcomed and looked after. There are always lots of people in the same boat so just a case of saying hello to people and having a mingle. I’ll talk to anyone now

Prefer the smaller gatherings (20 or less) to the really big ones as you can at least chat to people… but then I do like to talk ??

Interesting! I mean, I could, but I've never been to one so I'm not even sure what they are like... Are they based in a pub/bar? Do the organisers have to vet people/have a door list/be responsible?

I'm more the sort of person who shows up, talks crap, gets d*unk and ends up being carried home at the end

I went to my first one in Chester just before everything ground to a halt.

I really enjoyed it - it was big enough to feel busy but small enough that you felt you'd actually met people and really had a good natter.

I'm very much looking forward to the next one and I'm considering travelling to a few others around the country later in the year.

Honestly I think next time I'd put a status up a few days before inviting people to message me if they were going so we could chat beforehand and then that way it's a social with some people I already want to meet as well as people I don't know at all.

Been to loads of different ones up and down the country but also organised loads myself for over 20 years..they are fantastic for meeting and putting faces to the names you chat to / see online...if you go without any expectations you will enjoy them as you would any night out..club socials/ pub socials and just general get together...each have their own unique effects...

I went to the Northampton one on Saturday and it was an amazing evening.

So many fabbers arrived and the whole place was taken over. It even moved round the corner to another place in the masses too.

Amazing night, everyone was so friendly especially to the social newbies like I was.

Only downside is it needed a part 2 as you can't get round and chat to everyone in one evening.

We’ve never been to a swingers social, but attend a few kink socials and always tell people they are a good way of getting to know people and finding friends on the scene.

The only thing I tell people to be wary of is meeting the person behind an avatar can be fun but can also be a bit meh depending on how you have built them up in your mind.

But that applies to any online to real life meet situation.

We went to a couple pre-Covid and now a couple post Covid. There is quite a difference, to be fair- we've noticed that a lot of people chose to stay with people they knew before and newcomers were not as welcome as before. It could have been the venues, could have also been due to the fact Devil still can't stand for too long and a lot of people at those socials prefer drinking and chatting standing up. We did make some effort at the latest social but it felt like our faces just didn't fit on that particular night. Glad to hear others had better time.

Interesting! I mean, I could, but I've never been to one so I'm not even sure what they are like... Are they based in a pub/bar? Do the organisers have to vet people/have a door list/be responsible?

I'm more the sort of person who shows up, talks crap, gets d*unk and ends up being carried home at the end

I'm in the same boat, I'm keeping an eye open for anything in London or the south east and nothing so far.

As for setting one up, probably best to keep it on the small side, announce the date and the rough area it will be in on the forum and who it's for (singles, couples or mixed), set guest limits and then ask people to pm you if they want to attend, after which you give them the exact location and time and saves you messing around with bouncers/Vetter's.

This then allows you to enjoy the rest of the evening as the only people showing up are those that were fast enough to message and have gotten the reply back from yourself.

We went as a couple (no single men at Bristol social) but yes, that would probably work. You could put it up as a meet, I'm sure lots of people would be happy to escort a single lady!

That's definitely the case for me. I've only been to one fab social and my only low was that I still this long after encounter people on here who were there when I was that I didn't get a chance to speak to in person. Always next time!

Brighton - even Hove!

It’s been quite some time but I’ve been to four group socials I think.

Had fun at them all although the absolute best was when a good group of us hit canal street afterwards in Manchester, just great fun and laughed all night.

The highs… twice ended with a kinky threesome back in our hotel room, lows… farting in a crowd and nobody even cracking a smile

I’ve been to a few in Manchester, they have been hit and miss.

First one I went to was brill, was at a pub in the gay village and plenty of room and opportunities to socialise, everyone was friendly and chatty, made a few good friends from them.

My last two in Manchester have been absolutely rubbish, very clicky groups, not much socialising, only between groups, would have been ruined, but luckily a few couples who I met previously was there and had a good laugh with them.

You’re not that wrong though. My former FWB and used to regularly lament the absence of decent clubs and socials in the Portsmouth to Bournemouth area. Heathrow is good but it attracts people from a fair way off from So’ton so could be a bit hit n miss for you. Still, that’s even more true for FallenAngel so perhaps that would work for you too. If you go, hope you have a great time. Book a room. They’re usually pretty cheap and who knows!!

It actually put me off both socials and any thoughts of attending a club

I went with a fellow (female) forumite and, save for one other forumite, not one person even so much as made an attempt to speak to us during the whole evening

They all stuck in their little groups of 6-8 never left them

Before anyone asks what efforts I made, going up to a lone stranger at a bar and starting to chat is one thing - sitting amid a group of friends and interrupting a flowing conversation is on another level

Yes, three and although the first good with MrsB, the other two were awful. Can't remember what the one in Leeds was called (near carwash place) but it was a bit of a hovel and quite a few of the people there gave me the impression that it was just their local boozer! The third, a pub near Hessle road in Hull, was another disappointment but I'll be honest mainly because it just reminded me of the pubs and clientele that I remember from my youth.

I've attended a few around the UK in recent years and in most cases, I've found them to be somewhat difficult.

There can usually be the established 'groups' or cliques who dominate the evening, by only talking to their immediate circle of friends and anyone new, can be ignored or blocked from joining in.

Plus, they invariably are the ones who "hog" the Bar, meaning it's difficult to order drinks etc.

One organiser had the bright idea to have a period where every 10 minutes, 2 people at each table moved around every other table, which allowed new contacts to be made across the whole evening.

But generally, from the ones I've attended, organisers just sort out the venue, take the small admission monies and really do nothing else.

I am a bit of a social whore… lol I love talking to everyone and anyone and they are great in that you see what people are like “out in the open” so to speak…

I think the one big mistake I see people make is that they think “social” is some sort of codeword for “orgy”….. and as long as you can get that sort of thinking out of someone’s head, then a good night is normally had by all…

I think of it as a night out with likeminded people… you let your hair down, you put names to faces, you go up and say hello to all and sundry and you talk to people till your cheeks explode!!!!

On a mooch

Done two so far, Bank & MLS, had a great time at both. Bank I knew no one, but grabbed a drink and just got stuck in chatting. MLS I knew one person prior to the pre social, which is a great way to meet a smaller crowd before the main event. Looking forward to December and seeing if I can fit any others in beforehand.

I’m not shy to walking into somewhere on my own, but for those that are agree to meet someone beforehand and go in together.

That's really good advice about meeting before you go in, or try and message a few people in advance so you have someone to say hello to from the start. Then one conversation usually leads to another.

Ooh my low point….. me dancing at a munch in Wigan to shine by take that.. not realising I was dancing to take that when I screamed “this song is bloody good” and everyone killing themselve laughing…. Lol

Ooh an there was the time at a Newcastle munch there I was tied to a chair as birthday boy and having a lady do a lap dance… I’ve never gone redder….

And there there was the time at York when my female bestie managed to send a few glasses crashing to the floor and everyone looked at me as if I was the guilty party… to which I said “are we blaming the black guy now?”

I have a walking embarrassment…. Lol

I went with a fellow (female) forumite and, save for one other forumite, not one person even so much as made an attempt to speak to us during the whole evening

They all stuck in their little groups of 6-8 never left them

I went to a Brighton social years ago, it was nice chatting to some of the people that I had fabbed their pictures.

Only downside for me, was getting up the nerve to walk into the place. I am terribly shy, in social situations.

Chester

"I went to my first one in Chester just before everything ground to a halt.

I really enjoyed it - it was big enough to feel busy but small enough that you felt you'd actually met people and really had a good natter.

I'm very much looking forward to the next one and I'm considering travelling to a few others around the country later in the year."

Been to the chester social a couple of times pre covid, great times on both occasions

I've been to a few and they can be completely different with regards to atmosphere. The only downsides have been nothing to do with the socials, more indivual people's personal issues with me

On the whole they're great to meet people that you've seen or chatted with on here, or even complete strangers, most people are really friendly
