An unusual request perhaps but I am appealing to the collective knowledge of the forum posters.

What is the best way of moving from relative beginner to more intermediate without spending hours on a laptop?

I’m afraid that it just happens with experience and studying patterns maybe find a chess partner to practice with.

In fact, would strip chess work?

Hahaha

How do you find a chess partner? Sounds easy enough but how would you recommend?

I agree about planning ahead. To me this is key in scrabble and chess.

Thanks, guys - I am looking at finding a local club that meets not just online as part of it (for me) the human face to face interaction. My father taught me but I want to get better at it - love the logic and the fact you have to think several steps ahead.

I'd say learning a couple of openings so you don't fall into too much trouble early on

If you play online, analyse your games for mistakes

Also completing puzzles will help with pattern recognition

If you can evaluate your opponents likely move , and have a counter move ready depending on which way they go the your well on your way

Imo puzzles plus palying people who are willing to share where they think you went wrong. The whole "think 5 moves ahead" means the mistake was probably earlier than you thought

There are chess coaches for 1 to 1 but this is an expensive option. I know of coaches who teach at schools classes of 20 and 30 pupils per hour. Maybe there are coaches who teach classes of adults. In this way, it could be cheaper. Try Google to see whether there is such an option for you.

Hmm tricky, practice and more practice for me but I prefer to play against people rather then the computer. If it a computer your playing. Try mimicking it ‘s moves to begin with. It’ll always trade pieces so try to ensure the trade works in your favour i.e a valuable piece of its for a less valuable piece of yours. Slowly you’ll be able to recognise patterns in the way it plays. If it against a person there a few simple strategies you can look up that’ll help against other beginners or novices. Hope that helps x

The best way to improve your chess game is to play against far better opponents.I used to play chess every evening with a friend and we both became fairly good, but when we joined the chess club at school it soon became apparent that we weren't as good as we thought we were, but in time our game moved up a level or two.

Havent played it in a while now.

Ive played in a few online tournaments over the years yahoo chess as it was known.

A good friend played it but didnt know I did, We had plenty of hard battles together in the evening.

Everyone plays differently though you can play online for free.

prefer where you login via a site not via an app

chess.org is via a login but you can play as a guest as well

both you can play for free and invite a friend to play with registration I think for a friend

Yes castleing is a little like dp..you have to be careful to put the right bits in the right places at the same time...and you can only do it when you're good and ready...but don't leave it too late.

I dont like playing chess online. A huge part of the enjoyment of the game for me is seeing and hopefully reading the other player face, body language and reactions. Face to face across a boards adds the vital extra human element for me. Likewise I hate playing against computers. Computers just calculate. Humans make errors and are unpredictable. That element for me is far intresting and realistic.

Try playing players above you ability, I used to play alot, but find it hard to find those interested these days.

But I also played and won (sometimes easily), so I was playing people of less ability. I went to a chess club in a social club and was beating in minutes. So perhaps you can find a local club near you.
