It's pretty much that and the rarity of it that lead me to join this site so it certainly didn't help keep my marriage going, just having occasional sex because you feel it's been a while and you need to keep your partner interested is not the right reason.

Sounds very similar to what we call date night, making time in our busy lives for us and of course it always leads to sex.

Nope. I have sex because I want to.

Does this have anything to do with sharks?

I guess it depends if your partner is a shark.

The term maintainence sex is built around the idea of women having sex when they don't feel like it in order to keep their marriage alive.

It stems from the idea that men 'need' sex more often than women and places a duty on women to redress that balance so that he is happy ...

Once again the onus is on the woman to offer her body passively even if she does not want sex.

It holds the belief that men can't control their urges and if they don't get it at home then they will elsewhere.

Read the article in The Independent online. It's all over that newspaper

Does it strictly apply to women to offering sex to keep their partner happy or does this work the other way round?

Yes I agree, if it's sex through a sense of duty I would rather sort myself out, no effort put into it, I have to be desired and wanted not just have a sexual partner lay back and think of England. A date night is a conscious effort and pre-planned.

Thanks Tin.

Tom cannot post links. Nobody taught him. The Independant has an article about it also and it quite critical of it

Yet in the majority of my relationships I've been the one who got turned down more than the other way around. Its so annoying it's always assumed that women don't deal with wanting more sex than their partner too.

When I was expecting our second child a very senior health visitor addressed an ante natal class I attended. She told us that we probably wouldn't feel much like sex if we were breast feeding but should "lay back and think of England" (yes those were her exact words and no it wasn't 1870).

The men who were there were actually horrified which I found encouraging.

It also holds the belief that wanting sex is black or white, women and wonderful and mysterious creatures. Sometimes we want sex with an all consuming passion and sometimes it’s lovely to have a nice missionary position shag that just washes over you.
