Talking to a lady at work and she was saying her mum use to say to her you are not going out dressed like that us lads had no problems was it the same for you ladies

Not my sister as she was always told she looked beautiful. Me on the other hand was always told i looked like a tart and was made go back upstairs to wash make up off and cover up before being allowed out the door.

Yes and it has stuck with me all my life. I was never told I looked nice and probably one of the reasons I am so critical of myself now when I get dressed to go out and still feel there are things I shouldn’t wear.

It's still the same isn't it, regardless of who is saying it. Young girls can't choose what they want to wear because young boys aren't taught that skin is just skin?

How is it not that simple? Why does it change if it is the mother saying it?

Thankfully my parents were fairly absent through my teenage years, so I never got any of that hassle. I went out in some weird and wonderful outfits and I'm just glad it was all before smartphone cameras and social media, so there's no evidence to haunt me!

If it’s a mum saying it then it’s likely that she encountered some pretty appalling behaviour from lads in her youth and she’s trying to protect her daughter from having to deal with the same behaviour she had to.

Internalized sexism is still sexism. Whether it's coming from the mum or the dad, it's bullshit.

I remember my mum telling me about a married man having an affair with a single woman we both know. She put the blame on the woman for the man cheating, because "everyone knows men can't control themselves so it's up to women to keep their knees together".

She was astonished when I vehemently disagreed, even more so when I pointed out that not only was the woman single and not cheating on anyone, but actually I can still have sex with my knees together: in certain positions it's a great favourite.

Assuming men and boys can't control themselves does everyone a disservice.

Few things in life are simple, we simplify them to suit our narrative most of the time.

I know a mum who had a conversation with her daughter about what she was wearing. Women can't win, you wear revealing clothes to look good, for who. Men (Not solely, again, not simple). She wanted her daughter to know that a person is an entire package , not just a face and body. You can sell yourself with your mind, intelligence, beliefs and humour, your tits and arse are secondary. Anybody not able or interested enough to engage with those parts of you, they are not worthy of the rest.

I thought it was a interesting way of dealing with it.

I've 2 boys, their mum and myself try our best to give them a balanced upbringing. I stayed at home while mum was the bread winner. These sexist views and beliefs aren't only had by men, I found some women really did think a women should be the one at home. It's a long, hard struggle ahead if we're going to change it, and it's going to take men and women to change their own thought patterns and behaviour, as well as showing their kids the right direction. I've waffled on too long, I do apologise.

My perspective is this.

I stopped my girls from going out in 'too' revealing clothes or when wearing too much make up.

True women should be able to go out naked and remain unharmed.

True men need educating that women are not possessions or a lower form of life that can be treated violently or without respect simply because your dick is hard.

But these weren't women. These were my teenage daughters. And if anyone here thinks I would have risked their lives to prove a point you must have a screw loose......

As one person has said..... 'This is not a simple issue'

I don't like excessive traffic but I don't let a two year old out to play on the carriageway.

Additionally it is not just men who make judgements. Far from being a prude Mothers need to encourage their daughters to dress for themselves and to know that they don't have to take on the 'male prescribed hooker/slut look' to be attractive.

Most of the slutty looks that reign in western societies are not designed by women .... just worn by those with sheeps brains.
