I think we are so connected now on this little island both online and offline plus massive immigration that we are going to have accents and vocabulary now changing. It is a shame though as for such a small island we have a fascinating number of unique and varied accents.

It'll be a sad day when it does. I love a Northern accent me.

I notice this all the time in London.

"The news is reporting that the Northern accent is dieing out as the young ones are copying southern words and expressions.."

There's a world of difference between copying words and expressions and losing your accent, I've meet Scots who haven't been to Scotland in over 30 years and you'd think they still lived there.

Apparently sharks only know how to say "Aaaarrrghhhhh!!!" Because that's all anyone ever says when they see them and they're sad they can't learn the rest of our language to integrate with society. Such misunderstood creatures. What's a bit of biting between friends?

On a mooch

Words have come and gone over the years, influenced by so many things, however your accent is ingrained in you. No matter how hard you try to hide it or grow up away from the area, elements of it will always pop up in conversation.

Very sad if true. I have witnessed lovely Essex and Suffolk accents of my older relatives being replaced by a London influenced hybrid 'Estuary English' which unfortunately is closer to my own accent.

I'm a Manc - born & bred.

I've spent most of my adult life working all over the country so I've lost some of my Manchester 'twang'.

So long as i don't lose my northern charm I'll be a happy man.

I speak with quite an obvious Black Country accent. But lived in the south for 7 years and when I go Home to visit my brother tells me I “talk posh”

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

From a societal point of view I hope accents don't die out as that would be an utter shame.

From a personal and perving point of view, if the northern accents died out amongst the youngsters I'd just stick with the guys who are older. Which I do anyway.

I can’t imagine that’s happening because of he words used, the words don’t define an accent. As a northerner who spends the majority of my time in the south for the last 20 years I haven’t lost my accent and once I am back in the north the accent gets strong again.

Soft accents can fade but come on a geordie, scouser or manc have never been described as soft accents by anybody ever!!

.

There's a definite loss of local dialects happening but that's kind of to be expected isn't it? With the older generations slowly dying and the younger mixing more, travelling and using social media they will try and emulate certain accents or just lose them from mixing with others.

It's a shame really, I quite like some of the Northern accents! I hope the youth of today can take pride in their odd way of saying things.
