From now the Contraceptive pill can be bought over the counter in UK pharmacies for the first time.

Purchasers will need to have a consultation with pharmacists before being sold two types of progesterone-only, so-called "mini pills - but will not require a prescription from their GP.

Watched an episode of Heartbeat where a Doctor would only prescribe the pill to married women, and then only with the consent of her husband. How times have changed.

Have you tried getting a GP appointment lately? I gave up trying to get my contraceptive pill through my GP years ago. I'm lucky we have an excellent sexual health clinic nearby instead. Unfortunately others don't have that.

I also wonder if this is to battle cultural/religious issues around sexual health and reproductive rights etc.

Possibly a factor. We do currently have massive issues with access to contraception in this country though. The sexual health clinic in the city I used to work in was fully booked for 2 months for implant fittings at one point and had stopped adding to their waiting list as it was so long. That's crazy!

I've been trying to get a GP appointment for over 6wks. I got my pill re prescribed in ten minutes online with a well known pharmacy and it was done and ready in less than an hour. Works out at a few £/mth for 9mth supply. Personally, for me, the convenience and ease is worth the few quid.

My implant needed replacing in September. My local GP surgery no longer offers it, so I was referred to the local sexual health clinic. They are only seeing clinical emergencies, so I'm still waiting, with no idea how long it will take.

I'm not happy about buying the pill but I can see that right now it's a necessary service.

I’ve been using an online pharmacy for a couple of years, quick easy service, with online chat & checks, pills ready 48 hours later working out about £5 a month, plus GP gets a letter confirming what I’m taking.

I find this so much easier and more time effective for me and the GP as not taking up a 15/20 minute slot or a morning off work to get the next prescription.

I’ve never had a problem getting a telephone appointment with the GP they usually call within a few hours and each time I’ve been offered a face-to-face either later that day or the next morning.

My teenager has health issues and is in a different practice, same process for her, it’s been amazing. Very efficient

I much prefer this way of getting appointments. There’s no point heading in to see a GP if it can be deal with on the phone.

My hospital appointments with my consultant have worked the same way
