Tips for keeping cool without air-conditioning

Use a cold damp cloth to cool the sides of your neck. This helps cool the blood going to your brain and makes it think your body is cooler as well. Better still if you can keep it in a Ziploc bag in the fridge for a really cooling feel.

Cold water (refrigerated temp): take sips regularly of ice cold water. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty and then gulp it.

If you haven’t eaten or won’t be eating for a prolonged period, don’t drink only water, especially if you’re sweating profusely. Sweat depletes your body’s minerals quicker. They need to be replaced in order for your organs to be able to absorb liquid and function properly. Without any food, water cannot replace these minerals in sufficient quantities and will have a diluting effect instead, which can result in fainting or worse. At worst, it’ll simply wash through you and is of little help in keeping you hydrated. Drink sports/isontonic/electrolyte drinks, juices, water with a little sugar and salt in it at interval between water bout to keep your glucose and sodium levels up. This should help keep you from feeling too worn down.

Don’t eat heavy food like chocolates or food that is difficult to digest. It only makes your body work harder and you will feel even hotter. Save that for dinner time. If possible, eat lightly spread over a period instead of one heavy meal.

Dab cold water on your ears occasionally. This has an instant cooling effect.

If you have a spray bottle, keep water in it in the fridge. Spray on your face and other parts of your body as desired at interval. Put a slice of lemon in it of you desire a fresh scent that feels cooling.

Please add your tips or contest these. They’re what I have practised from many years living in the tropics (+ 32 daily) and places of extreme heat (+40c). They’ve worked for me when I have found myself without air-conditioning in those conditions. No fridge handy? Use a cooler box for the time being.

Fill hot water bottles with freezing cold water and ice cubes and put them in your bed, or put them in a pillow case and use them as a cushion to lean against if you have to work sat down all day.

I currently swear by little electrolyte tablets that dissolve in water. I've got a tropical flavoured one in my chilled water bottle at the moment because it's just too hot to eat and I'm sweating buckets in my PPE.

I'd been wondering about getting some because i don't feel like eating, tropical flavour sounds lovely

P.S. does anyone have any specific tips for keeping cool a fratured foot, i'm wearing a special boot which has lots of padding and is very hot !
