Gender Reveal Parties

What does everyone think of these parties where expecting parents celebrate the baby's gender?

If I had a partner who was expecting, I wouldn't have one to be honest. I would rather wait until the baby is born and celebrate then.

I was at one recently.

The outcome was what the parents were hoping for, so the whole garden erupted.

I hate to think what the atmosphere would have been like if it went the other way.

I think it's a bit ridiculous to have a party. Hopefully whichever way the result goes the child will be loved. It's not like anybody has any say in the result or is going to reject the child if the result is different.

It sounds like having a party because of an interesting piece of information coming to light, and I don't organise many of those. It sounds about as sensible as having a party to reveal the colour of the car you are going to buy.

For us, we didn’t find out the baby’s gender until she was born. No baby shower, party or anything like that but that’s just our preference!

In the US people let off large pink or blue fireworks or smoke bombs. Several houses have burned down as a result including casualties. Best just send a Congratulations card I think.

A celebration is good at any time but in the current situation I think it's even better to be able to celebrate life in any way you can.

Would we have done it? Probably not but we didn't send out save the date cards for our wedding or announce to the world that we were "in a relationship", it's a different world we live in

I remember reading that the lady that started it regrets doing it as so many people have tried to do big elaborate gender reveal parties that have ended in disaster.

Remember when one guy used explosives for a reveal party that resulted in a huge wildfire that caused millions of dollars in damage?

Well recently, a couple are now facing 20 years in prison as the wildfire caused by explosives at their gender reveal party last year tragically killed a firefighter, injured 13 people and destroyed 5 homes and 15 other builings.

But gender reveal parties are still surprises. They don't know the gender until its, you know, revealed

Just because it doesn't happen at the birth doesn't mean it's not a surprise.

I do think some of them are over the top. Saw one the other day where the dad was in a wrestling ring wrestling 2 friends in blue and pink tutus lol

Doesn't hurt anyone so let them do them and you do you.

I don’t like them, nor do I like baby showers.

I obviously know my baby is going to be a boy - according to the sonographer it’s very obvious! However we didn’t find out at the original scan, I got a confetti cannon so I could find out with our other boy. It was hard enough waiting a hour to find out never mind days while sorting a gender reveal

La la land

My sister's best mate was told she was expecting a girl, kitted out the nursery in pink everything was pink. And yep you guessed it it was a boy, and she hadn't really bought gender neutral clothes etc, and a boy couldn't possibly wear pink. I mean I doubt the baby would give a flying monkeys.

I had 2 very troubled pregnancies, and I didn't want any fuss until my baby was in my arms. I hope this isn't yet more pressure on women to be told how they should do pregnancy. There's already enough pressure on how to be a perfect expectant mother without adding more.

I remember seeing some videos of parties going wrong where they use balloons as part of the reveal but they either float away when trying to pop them release the confetti or they would be in different colours.

Can you imagine if the balloons were either red or green. Does that mean the baby is gonna a demon or an alien? Lol

When we were pregnant with our youngest, we thought we had the best idea.

My daughter was learning to read and so we wanted her to be part of the reveal. She was 5 years old at the time.

We got the nurse to write it down and seal it in an envelope. At the party we say everyone down around my daughter so she could read it out to us.

She opened the envelope……….she couldn’t read it!!! The nurse had wrote it in cursive so my daughter couldn’t read it

I had to whisper in her ear what it said. To this day she still thinks she knew before anyone else!!!

I bet there's been some falling outs already. I view it as a money maker and possible friendship breaker.

Not only now is there extra pressure on the expectant mum to be all happy and jolly and perfect and smiley, there's the pressure on the organiser.

Yeah great if as the parents to be you're not fussed about the how it's revealed but with all this bigger and better, more ingenious and different, and the growing entitlement that is encomapssing humanity, I wouldn't wanna organise one. Fuck that.

I'm pleased for those people who've had them and they've gone great and everyone's happy,

Personally don't see the point hut each to their own. The most important thing is that mother and baby are well throughout the pregnancy. Why would anyone be desperate to know the gender in advance? You would love your child whatever the gender and as for getting right colours and stuff, it's not really that important. My opinion but I suppose it must matter to some people. Have a nice gathering with family after the event if you like, why do you need partying before. As someone already said, expectant mothers in particular have a lot on their plate as it is.

"Seems another adopted American thing, we didn't have one, I don't see the point. Mrs "

The woman who did one of the first and whose post went viral has regretted the craze and is encouraging people not to do it.

I agree due to the amount of disasters that have been caused by the extremes some parents went to.

"You don't really know the gender until they are old enough to figure it out for themselves. Then if they trust you they will tell you. If they don't trust you they may well keep it hidden from you, and you'll never know who they truly are.

I think generally they are the gender they are born as tbh! X

Actually, no. There is a vast difference between sex and gender.

Sexual characteristics we are born with, gender can be chosen."

She said generally they are. Yes, generally they are. There are exceptions.

People are free to do this. Personally, I think I’d be worrying that the money was better spent on other things if a little one was on the way!

As others have pointed out, it should probably be a Sex Reveal Party rather than Gender. However, that sounds much more like a Fab thing than a wholesome family activity

A friend at worked streamed his live via facebook, the look on his face when he knew it wasn't a boy was priceless, and for that very reason I'm all for them.

Not nice for his daughter to see when she grows up and watches the video

I didn’t have one for any of mine, would have liked one though. Would have been nice to have some fun and gather everyone together before the baby arrived and the mayhem began.

"What does everyone think of these parties where expecting parents celebrate the baby's gender?

If I had a partner who was expecting, I wouldn't have one to be honest. I would rather wait until the baby is born and celebrate then."

Oh! Is that what a Gender Reveal party is? No wonder I got chucked out for turning up naked!

So until very recently I would have agreed with those saying they're a bit naff and unnecessary. I had never been to one, but my niece recently had one and it was lovely.

Of course none of us cared if it was a boy or girl, but it was fun, and a lovely way to celebrate the soon-to-be new addition to the family, and actually strangely emotional when the reveal happened...

As with all these things, each to their own.

People don't choose to change their gender it's basically who they are from birth! No choice! No one would choose this I'm sure! X

I do love the lovely little cupcake towers that some have. Any excuse to eat cupcakes is a winner for me. I’m not pregnant but maybe I’ll just order one for myself, and eat it in bed

Awful, but I hate being the centre of attention so that is factors in massively. Thankfully old enough to not be involved in any and likely won't ever be which is fine by me.

They weren't a 'thing' when I had my eldest and baby showers had just started gaining popularity by the time I was pregnant with my second. We found out the gender the second time but kept it to ourselves which annoyed the hell out of a lot of people but was our choice. We had our reasons for finding out but it didn't hurt anyone else to wait until the baby was born. My friends wanted to throw me a baby shower the second time round but I didn't want a big party and loads of fuss so we compromised on having a girls day out with afternoon tea, bubbles (for them) and manicures. I had a lovely relaxing day and lots of giggles with two of my closest friends before the chaos started, it was perfect.

What people do is up to them, they just aren't for me. Each to their own.

Same, they weren’t really popular when I had mine either. Shame! I love a good party and particularly when I’m about to have a baby and won’t be having any social events for at least the next 12 months!
