I was told years ago to open your loft hatch on hot days as heat rises, definitely makes a difference up stairs try it.

Any other ideas to help us all cool down

Not a proper one. Can put it in a plastic bag I guess if you don't want to get wet

Take a hot water bottle and fill it with ice... Put it on your ankles

Tonight, refill with ice and and put it under your pillow wrapped in a tea towel ... When you wake up, turn the pillow over.. Lovely cool side everytime

Genius! You are welcome

On a mooch

Frozen hand towel, put under your feet or one hand (depending on how you sleep), works for me

Central

Keep your bath filled with cold water, for extended dips when needed.

Do everything much more slowly than normal.

Turn electrical stuff off - except fridge and freezer

Keep doors closed, partitioning heat away from colder.

Cotton is better than synthetics on the bed

I'm that smug guy who bought an air con machine last year but before that I used to load up on fans and keep a spray bottle next to the bed. A misting of cold water always did the trick for me

"I'm that smug guy who bought an air con machine last year"

I need to buy a portable AC unit.

I live in a Grade A energy efficient new build so toasty warm in winter (with hardly any heating on) but boiling hot in summers.

Any recommendations?

I got mine from B&Q and it's the GoodHome Takoma 4500BTU (they also do a 9000BTU just depends on the size of your room). Dead simple to set up & has a few different modes including dehumidify. I put it on 15 minutes before I go to bed and the room's nice and cold. It is a bit noisy but the background noise helps me sleep so that doesn't bother me.
