Devin Townsend even though he is awesome and I love him, when people start throwing around the word genius I'm just not seeing it

"Devin Townsend even though he is awesome and I love him, when people start throwing around the word genius I'm just not seeing it"

It's more his song writing than guitar playing. He says himself he tunes it in a way that hedoesn't have to do much. I guess when he is singing too it's fair enough.

Mind you, he has seemed to have gone a little too intraspective recently.

Captain Sensible is way underated I think

Joe Bonamassa. He's a guitar collector and millennial guitar hero. No Page or Beck or Hendrix. Not an original bone in his body. Way overrated.

The guys in Mogwai. Legends.

Ok op, you asked for it!

Yngwie Malmsteen - he just rips off Paganini. Thinking that your audience does not know who the composer was or his music.

Just don't rate him.....

Yawn, yawn I'm the fastest guitarist on the block. Blah, blah, blah. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Slash is such an obvious choice when people talk of their favourite guitarist that I want to be all superior and pooh pooh thier choice, but I can't, he's just excellent, with great bends, sometimes a bit sloppy live though.

He's alright, but he was once voted number one guitarist in the world.. over Hendrix..

Sloppiness isn't always a bad thing. I find him a bit soulless.

I saw Zakk Wylde once, to me it was just a row. Its not about how fast they go but how their chord choices move you...

Best I ever saw was Angus Young, Dave Murray, Kirk Hammett and for melodies Johnny Marr.

Wow. You're brave.

Here's a name for you I say tentatively. Alan Holdsworth was technically brilliant and was very original, but I've never really got on with his playing. He always seemed to play fast for the sake of it rather than it sounded musical. Why use one note when sixteen will do?

I'm now awaiting execution by guitar aficionados. Luke

Should clarify, Mogwai are legends, most definitely not overrated. Underrated if anything. The most original guitar noise since Television.

"Hank Marvin. Very plinky plonky one string guy "

Oh come on. Not only is the man technically pretty damn good (it's nowhere as easy as it appears to play clean, melodic one string stuff), just the number of great players he inspired to pick up a guitar is more than enough for legend status.

Never got Jimmy Page, love Zep but not seeing the guitar god thing.

I’m not a guitarist so maybe I’m missing the technical aspect

More his production and sense of dynamics I think. Zep put the hard into hard rock. Immigrant Song remains the loudest and rawest sub-three minutes ever committed to tape.

Newry Down

Whilst at school and university many of my contemporaries worshipped at the shrines of renowned guitar players, all of whom I thought were self-aggrandising assholes, with massive misplaced egos, who used their talent to rationalise their addiction to alcohol, narcotics and the sexual exploitation of naive gullible young women.

I suppose it’s incredibly subjective. You can be immensely gifted with crap songs, or an average player with incredible songs. People will vote for the music they like best.

One of the few times that Dave Murray is mentioned in a ‘ the best’ list. Well done sir, one of the most underrated players there has ever been. (There I go voting for a member of my fav band!!)

Worthing

Page due to substance abuse was very sloppy live in a lot of tours.

Townsend never really recovered sound-wise after getting rid of the Gibson SG. Also substance abuse.

This is all subjective of course, I have listened to a lot of guitarists over the years some I like better than others.

Would I consider some of them overrated? yes, though that's not because I have any knowledge of the technical aspect but just from the sound and the music they produce. I have no doubt that some of the bands/artists that I don't like have great guitarists but if I don't like the overall music I don't listen to them.

I do look at the lists of 'greatest guitarists' 'best guitarist of the year' etc and think what a load of bollocks. The biggest problem with thos polls is that the same narrow list is picked on a regular basis due to the people nominating looking at the more famous names instead of taking a wider view; and if the voters are allowed to nominate then there are so many to choose from that it probably depends on what mood they are in at the time.

There are excellent guitarists who don't get mentioned often, Walter Trout, Mitch Laddie, Jared James Nicholls, Ben Poole to name four of my faves.

If you want to see what kind of talent is out there these days take a look at youtube, there are some superb players that you will never have heard of.
