Suits - with or without a tie

Having been recently promoted I now have to wear a suit to work. Whilst speaking to a friend he commented that their place although still suit wearers ditched the ties a while ago.

Now I find that strange, it's like wearing shorts with brogues!!

What do you think?

It depends what job you do / what the organisation does that you work for I think.

I dress casually for work, but always keep a suit and a tie in the office in case I have to go and see a client without a previous appointment.

If we are inter_iewing I will always wear a shirt and trousers, though usually opened necked and with a v-neck sweater.

It depends on the circumstance.

I love to see a man in full suit and tie. I also love to see the casino shot, with the open neck, bow tie undone and hanging loose (anyone sends me that photo, I can almost guarantee I'll have sex with them).

I like to see the grandad collar shirts under a suit too.

Hell, I just love a guy in a suit.

Personally, it depends on the shirt.

With buttoned downs, it should be worn without a tie, IMHO.

I do love the look of a well-dressed gent in nicely tailored and fitted suit, collar and tie.

An ill-fitted suit, even when new, does nothing for me.

If there`s another certain lady there, I know I`m in for some good clean fun followed by a lovely snog as she loves to undo my tie and retie it in a certain way! At one do I attended she spotted another guy wearing a tie and frightened the life out him when she started doing the same to him!

As I've spent my career predominantly in the Hotel business, my "working clothes" have usually been very formal!

That would include the Morning Suit (black jacket, grey/black striped trousers, black waistcoat, silver tie and silver breast pocket handkerchief) allied to a crisp white shirt and formal black shoes. Dinner Suits were the norm for Evening Functions or major events.

for my present job, I wear a company provided suit, completed with shirt and tie and formal black shoes. I have a senior managerial position and what I wear affords me a style as befits my role.

I'm of the opinion that a suit and tie is a must for business; it commands respect and confidence for all. Yes, I am of a generation that considers an open necked shirt with a suit is an absolute horror!! The wearer is slovenly dressed!

In contrast, how is it many days you notice a couple out in the evening; she is dressed up to the nines and has taken her time to look nice; he on the other hand, is in jeans (if she is lucky, he has washed and pressed them!) but invariably, he looks a slob! Come on guys, smarten up!

I know that but them aren't managerial roles and the tie is there as a symbol of authority and not as an aesthetic visual to make the suit complete as in the op's original question. A clip on tie doesn't say swerve or sophisticated it says fat fingers or grunt with tie.

Wear a tie, on your first day, if nobody else is wearing one, you will stand out if that isn't a comfortable position the tie can slip into your pocket, and jacket can be hung up.

In my last office I banned ties as there was no build room and we worked with open computers all around us most of the time, the static from a tie is a motherboard killer, though all my team kept one or more in the office in case we needed to go see a formal customer etc.

Yes, there are those in the Front line who do wear uniforms and I would agree with you there, but please at least consider there are professional levels of management who are not suckers and certainly are not defined as "not real managers" as you unkindly put it!

In my youth, when I was a few sizes smaller, I would wear ties, bow ties, or silk hankies tied as ties with collared shirts.

Then my neck grew thicker, and closed collar shirts became unflattering for me.

So I switched to open neck shirts, with or without button downs, and wear my now trademarked pearl necklaces instead.

For very formal business outings, I would wear a black or grey suit, with a colourful shirt. Otherwise I would team a colourful shirt with a colourful jacket.

These days a well fitting suit with an open necked shirt is the nom de riguer!

I wear suits to work with an open necked shirt. I do have ties in my drawer for meetings. But three things.

1. Suit has to be well fitted. There's nothing bad than an ill fitting suit

2. For shirts, stick to white or blue and preferably one with a Windsor collar.

3. Finish the look with a good pair of Oxford shoes. Might cost a bit more but so worth it. Try a pair of Loake shoes..

Always wear a tie with a suit, no matter what, and always have a Windsor knot....or half Windsor if in the city of London.

Shirts without ties should only be worn with sports blazers, and then only on weekends ect.

And remember the golden rule - nothing ruins a good suit quicker than a bad belt ! Waist adjusters are much more smarter.

Personally - I wear suits almost daily - but rarely ties. Smart but relaxed, rather than casual - and as I meet people in all kinds of businesses I have to take into account their corporate image and philosophy. But I've noticed that particularly in the higher education and finance sectors - unless you are 'customer facing' staff - ties these days are rarely worn!

Just head to canary wharf during the day - suits all round but barely a tie in sight!!

I doo keep half a dozen in the car at all times though!!
