They are hard work, need lot of upkeep - but they are amazing if you just lazily drift around nomadically. You'll need a mooring for it vary £1000 to £50000 a year in places on the Themes. Insurance, Safety certificates and license. Have to have pay temp mooring fees in lot places. Traversing locks is a very slow process so if you are in a rush then its not for you.

It is a different lifestyle, romantic, nomadic amazing but not for everyone.

A teapot on the boat's roof is the canal equivalent to pampas grass in the front garden.

The only one I noticed was on a boat also flying a pride flag, so maybe.

Thanks for tha advice pal, sick of renting and want my own little place .hardly use the rooms in the house so ,wouldn't be to hard to just be on a boat .start work early and finish early and quiet handy so would keep on top of thing that need doing as plenty of time on my hands .it looks such a peaceful life

It is a peaceful life , but that is not for everyone especially if you need people - won't say any more on that.

It may be seem romantic but it can be very solitary. Renting is very different than owning and living but if you can make the transition it can be amazing. I'm lucky I have a gorgeous oh to share it with

Yeah my fwb thinks it will be good to stop over weekend and do a bit of cruising .i have a lot of solitude in the week when it kids aren't with me so sure id be ok .im sure id bump into other boaters .couple of good forums on Facebook too

I've just finished watching both series of Canal Boat Diaries on iPlayer. I really like Robbie Cummings who presents it, if you haven't seen it I'd recommend tracking it down. It a 'warts and all' view of life on the canals.

Yeah, Colin & Shaun and dog number two. I've seen a fair few of their exploits. Cruising the cut is not bad either.

Did anyone see that stag do gone wrong? They put the boat in the lock and somehow it got flooded because the front of the boat was wedged so it tipped and the back filled with water and then they just left it
