New Zealand-born rugby union star Quade Cooper has been refused Australian citizenship - despite playing for the national team on 70 occasions.

The former Wallabies fly-half, who has lived in Australia since the age of 13, described the moment his application was rejected on Tuesday as "awkward".

The interesting thing here is that his ability to be selected for and to have played for Australia is based on residency, not on citizenship.

He still resides there, presumably completing whatever paperwork etc . that is needed for him to do so.. and he still plays his club rugby there also.

Good enough to play rugby for them but not considered to have fully committed and understood the Austrlian values...
