Have you ever regretted a big decision you made?

Life changing decisions I mean, where you had a few paths you could take, and you picked one but later regretted it?

What did you do about it?

I regret selling my house when we moved in with my mum, I panicked and sold up but I think I should have thought about it and rented it out.

Can’t do much about it now, but live and learn.

No not really, I feel like a lot of my decisions led to where I am today and managed to get some shit sorted because I took the path I chose..

my only kinda regret was not transitioning a lot earlier in life but i think everyone who has done it, has that regret. So…

Definitely yes, my biggest regret is something I don’t really speak about so I’m not sure why I’m telling strangers but my best friend tried to give me advice regarding somebody I was in a serious relationship with, I didn’t take the advice and distanced myself from him as I thought he was simply a bit jealous with me settling down and not partying anymore, now unfortunately he passed away and he was right with his advice about her and I never had the opportunity to thank him for his friendship, support and being like a brother to me. Sorry to get so deep on a thread.

If I hadn't got a job and married young instead of going to university, I wouldn't have my son. The relationship didn't work but it meant that I met the most wonderful man who I hope to grow old with.

I'm now doing the university bit from September

Life makes you what you are.

I recognise some wrong decisions along the way, but ultimately I’m here, living the life I have, because this is the path I chose. I shouldn’t have ever agreed a 2nd chance with my ex husband for example… bad decision. But that seemingly bad decision brought me my daughter so it can’t be the wrong choice and I can’t possibly regret it. But it also caused me quite a lot of pain I would have avoided.

I think we all have regrets in one form or another, but I can honestly say that I'm at peace with all the decisions in my life, right or wrong

I ended a relationship with a woman I loved (10 yrs ago) although she said she loved me and being 18 yrs younger I felt at the time she would have a better life without me. Have not loved since also heard a few years later she had married so not a lot I could to repair.

Regrets, well...I could have a few of them if I dwelled on such things but I don't.

Whatever decisions I've made I've just got on with.

Sure I could have made better ones along the way but hindsight is a wonderful thing!

I technically regret a few decisions on "friends' that I had in my life... only because I allowed them my time. I've gotten way much better friends on the back of those though, so I'm not gonna complain too much.

I got the GOOD friends from those situations x

Was the right decision (or so I thought!) with previous Mrs. She left me 4 weeks after.

Mrs N would love a new baby but is having to make do with a puppy.

Both career related.

1: not joining the royal marines and deciding to become a carpenter.

2: a few years later I had the opportunity to train as an avionics technician and once again opting to stay as a carpenter.

Regrets no, bad decisions more than a few. Actions/decisions have consequences or causality. But then ypu think where am I now and would I have been here. Wasted alot of time on pursuing false goals. Made much money but it never made me happy. Others benefit so was not all bad.

I think that all of us reading and posting on this thread have all made the 'right' decisions. Any other path that diverted from the one you're on now could have led to many different circumstances including a hole in the ground.

When I had just recovered from cancer and my body failed me, everything stopped, working, couldn’t balance, had poor mobility, immune system went down, wanted to study for a degree in purchasing, but retreated into myself and didn’t push myself to achieve my goal. Focussed on the long recovery which took years. Finally looking to go back to college and complete my lifetime goal.

I've always done the best I could with the information I had. I've made some very poor decisions with the gift of hindsight, but they were the only decisions I could make given my knowledge at the time.

I've not taken the easy path but I've reached a great place right now so I can't regret any of it.

Very interesting thread and some touching personal stories.

Mine are all things I didn't do, through excess caution or lack of confidence. The best things in my life have always happened when I took risks and was brave.

There must be a reason why you chose that path and that decision and if you feel if it was the wrong decision you learn from it but don't regret the decision.

I take the view that whatever decisions I have made I made for the right reasons for me at the time - they may have turned out to be wrong, but they were still justified decisions at the time I made them.

The *only* thing I truly regret, and still dwell on to an extent 38 years later, is leaving the Navy before I finished training and even that I accept there's nothing I can do about it and I wouldn't have had the good things in the alternate life I've had if I'd not left

Can’t remember who wrote that but it feels poignant.

Nearly all my regrets are from stupid decisions I’ve made.

But then, many of those stupid decisions have led me to the happy position I’m now in.

Agree strongly with this. At the end of the day all the decisions I've made have made me who I am today and I wouldn't change any of them. They're not regrets anymore, instead I see them as experiences I've learned from to allow me to grow.

I am ex military, my battle buddy went missing in action in ‘83. I regret not being on that mission, I could have kept him out of trouble. (He was notorious for taking stupid risks..)

Like everyone I have a few regrets biggest one was choosing the wrong career and staying in a crap pay job for over 25 years .While yes I loved the job it wasn't worth it or the injuries. Now I know I'll never own my own home even though I love to

Bad relationships etc they just made me who I am today so no real regrets there.

Pretty much every major decision I've made since about 2004, both personally and professionally, has turned out to have been the wrong one ultimately, one way or another.

So I have plenty of regrets, which is annoying, but I can't change them so I have to suck it up and try to learn from them
