It was announced before the final of the European Football Tornament that Jadon Sancho may sign for Manchester United. Put yourself in his shoes. To play in a country where many have racially abused him.

I guess if I was in his shoes then I would be apprehensive to say the least. Had anyone started a new job and not been nervous? This man and five others had the courage to do his job in front of 60,000 people. And the fickle then turn on their idols...

If he does not come to play in England then who can blame him.. If he does come then cheer him and cherish him. He is human like the rest of us..

And he has simply said.. Racism won't win...

Let it be so..

He’s an absolute baller. One day he may even be as good as Saka.

On a serious note I would not blame him one bit if he stayed abroad.

I wish him a long and happy career. Just not against Arsenal.

Personally, 30,000 odd people calling me a black cunt twice a week isn't something money could compensate me for.

Are you genuinely suggesting he should be okay with receiving racial abuse if he gets paid a lot of money? I hope you keep that same energy for club owners who are billionaires, or Wall Street bankers who shafted everyone during the financial crisis. Probably not though. Not as easy a target as young black lads playing football, are they?

"To play in a country where many have racially abused him"

Define many? much of the racist abuse was from foreign IP addresses, afaik only 5 accounts in the UK were confirmed, how much more racist abuse came from this country of 65 million?

Just because the cancerous media keep pushing their narrative doesn't make it true.

Everyone's definition of many will vary.

1 abuser is too many.

You're talking about online abuse only.

Abuse isn't only delivered by social media. Go to a live game, the abuse hurled at players is vile.

More than 150 football-related racist incidents were reported to police last season, Home Office figures show, a rise of more than 50% on the year before and more than double the number from three seasons ago.

The figures, revealed by Home Office minister Susan Williams, show three years of increases in reported incidents across England and Wales, with a sharp rise from 98 to 152 between the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.

Previously there had been a decline in reported incidents of racially charged non-violent abuse, such as chanting or verbal intimidation, from 99 during the 2013-14 season, to 78 in 2014-15, 68 in 2015-16 and 70 in 2016-17.

Not for one minute. Racial abuse is wrong and I’ve spent a lot of time fighting it. I also think footballers get paid an obscene amount of money but I don’t spend much of my time fighting that.

Nothing in my post was meant to condone or “offset” racist abuse and my apologies if it came across that way.

There are literal billionaires on planet earth and not one of them is a footballer. If you're so bothered about the damage wealth hoarding does, why are you not bothered by the even more obscene amounts of money they make through exploiting people?

Footballers are mostly working class lads from poor backgrounds and that is often reflected in the amount of charitable causes most donate to and how they use a significant amount their money to benefit the disadvantaged. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos has spent billions to go to space for 4 minutes, all the while saying "I have so much money I don't know what to spend it on." when he alone has sufficient wealth to end food poverty in the entire continent of Africa, if he so desired. Like almost all billionaires, he doesn't though. He cares not for other people, you only need to read about working conditions in Amazon warehouses for that. It's footballers who we should blame though, obvs.

First, I've already said that my original comment was not well thought out and apologised.

Second, I AM bothered about the inequalities of wealth across the planet. Why did you think I wasn't?

Third, If there had been a post about Bezos or Musk, I might well have posted a comment. But this post was about footballers, not them.

Fourth, I have standing orders that go from my bank account every month (for quite a few years now) that directly support charities working in the developing world. That's my ongoing contribution to fighting global wealth inequality.

Fifth, I have personally worked for charities in the following countries. Nicaragua, Ecuador, Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi. By work I mean project management, managing other volunteers and manual labour. I can't call this ongoing as covid restrictions have curtailed all of this for me. I also did a protracted period of work in an Asian country with an armed insurrection and hostile environment, but for the sake of clarity, I will declare I was paid well for that.

Sixth, some footballers deserve massive credit for the charitable work they do. Undoubtedly they will have changed people's lives for the better. Some other footballers have spunked away their money on booze, fast cars and luxury items. (Others have just wasted it :- ) I think this is about the type of person they are and the fact that they are footballers is incidental. I still think they get paid too much for playing a game that entertains people.

Seventh, I think I may be revealing too much personal info about myself through this post, but I've decided I will press "Post Message" anyway.

Eighth, I've already said my earlier comment was not well though out and I don't see much point in repeating that every few posts.

That's nice. We ain't reading all that though.

It says a lot that in an anti-racism post about an English footballer your first instinct was to question if being paid more would essentially soften the blow. No amount of carping on about your charity work will change the fact that was your very first thought on the matter.

Big "I have black friends therefore I can't be racist" energy in this defence too. Not quite the save you thought it was.

Adios

No, you're right. That's one of the reasons I think my first comment was so wrong. I hijacked a serious thread about racism with my unimportant prejudice against footballers in general!

The comment about "it's more about inequality of wealth rather than racism" is a response to your latter comments about me. It's off topic and should be a thread of it's own.

Thanks for your comments though. Feedback is always good for self reflection.

As an Englishman, you should be embarrassed that there is usually only one or two ethnically white English players in the under-18 squad. That's our future right there. Our own people wiped out. And none of you give a solitary shit. "Ooh, at least I wasn't racist!" they cry as they look around and see a minority of white faces. Sad.

"That's our future right there. "

All English men are able to play for the national team if they are good enough, regardless of their skin tone. If white boys were better players, they’d get in the team. The future of English football depends on getting the best players.

" Our own people wiped out. "

They are your own people. Look back into history. Britain has always had an ethnically diverse population. If you mean white people are being wiped out, then you’re wrong. You do know that if a black player is picked, they don’t kill the white player who didn’t make the team?

" And none of you give a solitary shit."

Not one teeny tiny solitary shit. I couldn’t care less who plays in a football team.

Why are you apprehensive about being in an ethnic minority? Do you think your previous behaviour might come back to haunt you or is it that you know how ethnic minorities are treated by some people?

Contributing almost 1/18th of his wealth is a nice PR stunt, but if you think it atones for the awful working conditions he imposes on his workforce then it achieved exactly what he wanted it to. Like a cat and a laser pen.

Amazon are one of the worst culprits for damaging the environment. In 2018 alone they were responsible for 44 million metric tons of CO2 being released into the atmosphere. $10bn is unlikely to reverse the impact of his own company since its inception, let alone make any meaningful impact on the planet as a whole. If he wants to actually contribute to a cleaner environment, he needs to start with his own back yard.

Anyway, this topic has gone astray. Can't wait to see Sancho for United! Top top player, clearly a very grounded young guy and an elite mentality. He'll stick it to the racists on the pitch.

This Amazon you mean?

Amazon's environmental report came with a list of ambitious pledges.

By 2030, the company plans to use 100 per cent renewable energy and have 50 per cent of its shipments emitting net zero carbon.

By 2024 it plans to have wind and solar power make up 80 per cent of its energy mix.

Back to Jason Sancho, absolutely no excuse for the abuse he received.

Also, can't wait to see him in the premiership every week.

Interested to see where OGS plays him....... And how he comes with the Premier League. I hope he does well.

That's still the same Amazon who treat their workforce like crap and ran a PR campaign of Twitter bots designed to tell people what a great place it is to work at whilst a woman was forced to give birth on the warehouse floor and it isn't lost on us that you keep dodging that point. And they're targets, they've not been met yet. Amazon has done far more environmental damage than their planned measures and Jeff's PR donation will reverse.

What's your stake in this anyway lmao, are you Jeff Bezos? Do you want to sheen his bald head until you can see your reflection in it? Bizarre how some people have such a hard on for someone who is so morally bankrupt.

Bizarre how some people have such a hard on for someone who is so morally bankrupt."

" Is that the same Jeff Bezos who just gave $10 billion to help fight climate change?

Think he could end up playing on the left a lot in the early games if a strong Rashford stand-in doesn't emerge from our options, but hopefully it won't come to that because United will just end up lopsided again

There's rashford, martial and Dan James all more suited to that left berth. Reckon that's why Dan James hasn't gone on loan to cover rashford. If he plays Sancho left, that will mean James right, and James is much better from the left so it seems a no brainer to me that is martial stays, it'll be martial cavani Sancho front 3.

Rashford needs surgery on his shoulder and possibly his ankle. He'll be out until at least October. Let's hope we don't get the Martial of last season but I'm not sure I'd trust him on the left at this point if I was Ole, he doesn't track back consistently enough. Dan James could potentially claim that spot temporarily, agree about him being much better from the left but still don't know if his top level is good enough against most PL teams. We've been very impressed with Elanga in preseason and watch the U23s a lot, think he's ready to make the leap but would need to see him in more competitive games to know for sure. Then you could also play Sancho on the left and have either Mason or Amad on the right...so many options! Great problem for Ole to have

I think one of the things that was visually evident (if not vocally) was the lack of ethnic diversity within other European teams. A friend of mine made a comment about Rudiger being black and German almost like they didn't expect there to be black people in Germany?!!!

SOME of our football fans are brain dead morons that will always find someone to hate and blame for their own life failings.

England has a team consisting of English players. If you were born here, you belong here.

It's not about the colour of your skin but the contribution you make that makes Britian Great.

(Holy fuck that sounds cheesy, but you get my point)

Agree on Dan James not being good enough, he should only be coming on last 20 mins in games, but as cover till rashford is fit, then I think the left forward will be between rashford and martial. They both are susceptible to dips in form, so that competition might be good for them two. Martial doesn't track back but has shown he doesn't have the consistency to play as the 9.

Think signing Sancho will allow greenwood to play more central. Especially as he'll probably be replacing cavani season after.

Disagree slightly on Rashford/Martial. Rashford is streets ahead when he's at his best, but how often have we seen that due to injuries he's been carrying (and played through) over the last 2 seasons? He's had that shoulder injury since October last year! He always finds a bit extra in the tank for City no matter what though, true red in that sense

Reckon Tony is marginally better as a 'false' 9 than on the left these days, but his movement is obviously nowhere near Cavani's. Last season was a total write off for him no matter where he played, you'd hope it's only up from here even if he's not going to be with us long-term!

Really looking forward to seeing more of Greenwood at CF. Think he's done enough to be 2nd choice to Cavani now (another problem that leaves Martial in limbo). All the noise is United will sign a striker next summer whether it be Haaland or Kane. I reckon one of them will be the striker for the next 4-5 years from 2022/23 and then Mason will make it his own when he's 24/25 and in his physical peak. That's just what I reckon Ole is planning anyway, he takes a long term view on everything and has done brilliantly in that regard thus far.

Can't wait for the new season! UTFR
