Those in power would love you to think that though, wouldnt they?

It justifies their existence.

I’ve often heard that said about people after promotions. It’s usually because the guy that was known before now has to be professional with their old colleagues and has to be firm.

It’s never that they’re power mad, just that they can’t be mates anymore

Yes it happens a lot in my area of work unfortunately. When you are seperated by a banding system, it changes people.

In terms of a promotion I think you have to change.

I got promoted to be the manager at my last place and tried to stay on a mates level. It just didn't work. Of course when I started doing my job I was then seen as the biggest arse going

People definitely take it too far but like a lot of stuff in life it's all about finding that fine line.

It often happens! Companies don’t prepare people for managing others and it causes no end of conflict and I’ll feeling

If your friend is promoted at work, do you expect them to be exactly the same as before, one of the lads? That isn’t possible as they now need to take a step back and have a professional relationship instead. Both parties need to learn and understand the new boundaries.

It is always an issue when somebody is promoted from within they can no longer be one of the lads. They might also have knowledge that those lower down do not know about. They might not be power mad but because they are now giving orders and no longer cracking jokes and messing around it seems that they have changed.

Some can adjust, others cannot.

Other side of the coin is if you get promoted you tend to see the other side of some of the people you work with who you now have to manage.

Steve might be a great laugh in the breakroom but is off sick every time the sun comes out.

Mary might bring lovely cakes in on a Wednesday but spends half her shift in ciggie breaks or awol.

As a manager I have to manage that. I've been involved in disciplinaries where things have happened that would make your hair curl, but the work collegue concerned has spun a whole "poor me, why are they picking on me" story which was miles from what had actually happened.

Also middle management you get it from above and below.

Being on "the other side" is a proper eye opener .
