I realise that this topic has been discussed before, however in light of further racist abuse and with ongoing issues on here, I felt that it was relevant.

To keep it fairly succinct; why does it happen in your opinion and what can be done to prevent or combat it?

Is it ever justified and what constitutes abuse are also related here

But some people will always feel the need to blame others for their own short comings.

It's simple, live your life without participating in it and teach your children it's not acceptable under any circumstance and it WILL one day be stamped out.

In the shorter term those going into social media to post racist or abuse should be dealt with as per the law of the country they are in, and if those laws don't cover it they should be updated

Racism isn't always just about abuse either, it can be a person's general attitude.

One of my neighbours was talking about my new neighbours and said in a hushed voice "and a black man goes in there too" I was quite taken aback by this

Now ..my new neighbours I dislike for being selfish, noisy, demanding and self centered..

Their black friend though I do like, as he is considerate, polite and seems like a nice bloke.

We are all products of our environment ment. Isms are passed on from generation to generation. Isms are a two way street, isms bread isms.

Italian newspapers were publishing stories saying the whole world wanted Italy to win perpetuating Englishism.

It is easier to try and bring others down rather than step up your own game.

Conflict is human nature, people use differences to try and make themselves look better - that's from both sides

I was subjected to a hate campaign on Facebook and WhatsApp by people here I had never ever spoken too.

Hate comes in many forms. The internet just gives a place for them.

It will never stop, it's part of human nature. Mostly down to jealous

I'm not sure I trust privileged Californian bros to adjudicate what and what does not constitute racism. I don't know what the solution is, but leaving it to the tech companies seems to be a recipe for disaster in a pluralist heterogeneous world.

There’s a guy called Andrew, who works for Savills who decided to abuse the players who missed their penalties online.

Twitter erupted, he’s all over it and Savills themselves have just tweeted they’re looking into it, as they employ him.

He chose abuse, now hopefully he’ll pay for that with his job and even possibly a Police enquiry. So what he thought was going to get him some praise amongst his fellow Neanderthals, could possibly now get him a criminal record and a trip to the dole office.

There's reasons and causes. Not saying the below covers it all, far from it, but these 3 stand out for me.

- people fear what they don't known/understand.

- people can't express their emotions in a healthy fashion.

- people can't/don't want to want to recognise their own failings

Lot term education and integration is key. Short term is adequate punishment for people who use racist abuse.

I think the answer is education, at school and at home. Unfortunately home is often where racism and bigotry lives.

I think people define themselves both by what they are and what they are not. Bigotry (not just race related) is one way in which people try to assert their legitimacy and membership of the "right" group of people. "I'm a 'real' xyz", sort of thing.

It emerges more in times of stress, as well as with the courage of drink, groups, and anonymity.

The internet allows people to find each other - which is a blessing sometimes, but it also means that the bigots find and amplify each other. I'm often stunned by the uniformity of language stemming from certain groups, language that is almost unique to certain viewpoints (or at least arose there).

What to do? I wish I knew.

Abusive behaviour should never be tolerated whatever form it takes - and there are plenty of instances on here from sly side swipes at others to people starting threads about others purely to have a dig - and when it happens and is plain for all to see what it is, the only thing that can be done is to report it and hope that admin take the appropriate action, which they often do with forum bans of varying lengths - of course you can also call people out publically but that can often make a bad situation worse.

I guess the same applies to other social media platforms too - they all have their "reporting" portals and perhaps of more of us used them rather than turning a blind eye the more likelihood of not only the behaviour being tackled, but the more those companies will be forced to take responsibility and clamp down.

Online abuse.

Over the past few decades, people had learned that there were certain things that they couldn’t say in public, so open abuse died down a fair bit, but a lot of that ugly stuff was still there, just not openly expressed.

Online communication gives people a feeling of a anonymity and lack of consequence, so some of that material started being expressed more openly again. And movements like Trump opened things up further.

Lack of accountability is a huge problem. We should all be completely accountable for things we post online.

Also, people feel “braver” at a keyboard, posting things they would never dare say out loud or say to someone’s face. Let’s refer to this particular population as cowards.

Unfortunately, online abuse is a better barometer of what people actually think.

They are still fans, in addition to those things, and as I have said elsewhere that specific subsection of fans while not exclusive to football and England, are some of the worst and most vile and scummiest of any fans in the world.

Other sports, while they do still have their issues, don't come close to the level of hatred of the subsection of football has.

No. I refuse to call them fans. Fans support the club and its players and don't turn to vile racial abuse when players lose out on a game of chance, which is essentially what penalties are. They don't abuse security staff and police doing their job just because they think they have a right to get in to a stadium without tickets. They are disgusting.

Football does seem to attract some of the worst offenders and bring out some of the worst behaviour.

But if football disappeared tomorrow this behaviour would not disappear, would just reappear somewhere else.

Accountability for what people post online would be a massive change, the very occasional prosecution and slap on the wrists at the moment (always seeks to be a scared kid) is just a joke, no deterrent at all.

How about if everyone who didn't enjoy abusing other people stopped using social media for an extended period of time? That would concentrate the minds of those in charge via the pressure put on them by advertisers pretty sharpish I imagine.

I can’t see that happening. A lot of people are addicted to their social media and wouldn’t give it up. And when a load of media stars decided to have lockout periods recently, they skipped social media for a day. One day! What good does that do other than a “ooh look at me” piece of virtue signalling. If they abandoned the usual suspects and moved to a new platform that is properly policed, then you might see some real change.

That is untrue and if you genuinely think there has been no racism on this site then you are at best nieve!

On the whole like most of society they majority on here are decent people but you still get racist idiots.

Iv seen some appalling racial abuse on the forums but the mods are normally very quick to deal with it.

I dont believe its all down to how the individual has been brought up, i think idiots are just idiots.

People will always discriminate on what they see in when in a pressured or angry situation, words such as ugly, bitch, black, brown, white, bald, and so on. Its always going to happen and unfortunately theres not one person here that can say they havnt used a discriminatory remark against someone at some point be it in your own airspace for your ears, be it a taxi with a ethnic driver pulling out on you or a large person barging past. It happens unfortunately, it will never not happen all we can do is be as nice as we can and not give moronic acts airspace.

Abuse comes in many forms, as well as isms. Your get the open abuse/ism, then you get the underhanded hidden abuse One-Up-Man-Ship which is rife in the forums and encouraged by many, as well as many other platforms.

Reading through forums right now there are at least 3 threads that have those disguised abuse posts.

Many here are guilty of it but think it has gone un-noticed by everyone but the ones they consider peers.

Often it is like junior school class the guy picking on the fat kid and the girls giggling.

Sorry many are guilty of it.

There is the old saying of "Getting your own house in order before criticising others"

And "Obviously Pot/Kettle springs to mind"

How you choose to respond to this post is entirely choice.

How you choose to respond to this post is entirely choice.

I respond by absolutely agreeing with pretty much every word and often it is the underhanded and snide abuse that is the worst form, at least the overt abuse can be tackled head on, and dealt with appropriately by mods/admin - the more nuanced forms it's not always easy to tell unless you are a part of it.

I've seen and heard things that truly make my toes curl at times and wonder about how "adult" members of an adult site really are.

Instead of starting threads about people you don't like, just ignore that persons posts instead. Bringing it onto the forum is not what the forum is for.

If you think a post is breaking rules by anyone, report please, the same if you think a mod has missed anything unsavoury going on that is dressed up as "banter"
