The right place

I completely agree.

The England team and manager have done a great job and conducted themselves well throughout the tournament but football has a big problem with the fan base.

It starts with the way that the players back chat and shout at the referees, it encourages a lying and cheating and disrespect. It could be easily stamped out if the FA wanted by booking players that did it. But clearly this is a part of the game they endorse.

Sad but true. Also sad that it is predictable.

In terms of violence, it’s not as bad as the old days, but it is still ugly.

As for online racist abuse I simply don’t understand how it is allowed without consequence. I feel that if I posted something nasty I would be held to account and that is exactly how it should be.

a few cars smashed windows here. plenty of shouting and angry people around 2am going back and forth.

i wasnt surprised with the storming of wembley by fans without tickets, and i knew soon as they missed the pens abuse would be coming the players way.

you say no other sport has trouble like this, it does.

go look at ice hockey in canada or the states when they win the stanley cup.

streets are packed and its like a riot with everything getting smashed or torched. and they are celebrating a win.

crazy.

I don't understand it either

I feel sorry for the England team and majority of supporters who get dragged down by these louts at every tournament

Englands reputation isn't good and this behaviour has come to be expected and almost accepted as the norm for them now

Sad times for English football

The racist abuse of Saka, Rashford and Sancho is just disgusting. I don't understand any of the mentality of any of it tbh

I don’t think they specifically endorse backchat and shouting at refs, but the are afraid to clamp down on it.

You could change it in one day. Only the captain is allowed to speak to the ref to understand the decision, anyone else who approaches the ref is booked. That’s how easy it would be to change.

Also, if yellow cards meant 10 minutes I. The sidelines, like in other sports, then yellow cards would matter more. Italy picked up 5 or 6 yellow cards last night, but that did no real harm to their chances. Playing most of the game with 10 men might change attitudes to picking up bookings

I was watching the game at a mates last night and it was all rosy until Italy scored.

For the entire second half Southgate was a cunt, players who had smashed it all tournament were suddenly useless and shouldn't have been playing.

It did my head in so I left after 90 minutes and I'm glad I did. Dread to think what it would have been like during/after the penalty shootout.

I like football but I think I'll just watch it in the comfort of my own home next time. It completely ruins it for me.

The attitude towards referees wouldn't be tolerated on a rugby pitch

Any verbal or physical intimidation or abuse towards an official should be an automatic red, they'd soon cut it out then

Too easily and casually dismissed as “a small minority”.

It’s a shame, as Southgate seems a very decent fella and he has been very clear how he wants the fans to behave.

But football support has a nasty side. Not as bad as when I was going to games in the 80’s, but there is still a nasty element there

It is a culture that starts at a very early age too. I went to a local match with 'family' tickets arranged by the school and the behaviour both on and off the pitch was awful. We have not been again. My friend's 10 year old son now swears alot and she puts it down to him emulating the football players he idolises. I can't see this changing.

Market Harborough / Kettering

I was at Wembley yesterday watching the 1000's of fans arriving and 98% of them were having a fantastic time singing, dancing and drinking. Unfortunately the remaining 2% were absolute idiots! I watched as some of them were throwing half full cans of beer and empty glass bottles across and into the crowds. This was a crowd that included a lot of young children. Can you imagine what would happen if a glass bottle hit someone on their head or even worst in their eye?

I managed to get through my post without mentioning rugby, as that is like a red ref to a bull for many football supporters!

I’ll mention a different sport though, Gaelic football in Ireland. If there is backchat, the free kick gets marched forward 10 metres, and another 10 metres if you still haven’t shut up. And if someone lays a finger on an official, they are in serious trouble. A top player for the top team, grabbed a linesman’s arm to get his attention and query a decision... 13 week ban at the most crucial stage in the season. That’s how easy it is to legislate.

No. Don't distance them from it. They ARE fans as well as other things that they may be, be it criminals, racists, hooligans, idiots or whatever. They are still fans, their methods are passionate and fanatical, should not be condoned and should be challenging but does not change that they are fans.

Im not much of a sports fan but I like the big events - football, rugby and really looking forward to the Olympics.

I feel proud of Graham Southgate and the team. They have done more to bring the country together than most people in the public eye and the last few years have been very decisive.

I admire all the penalty takers - it takes a huge amount of courage to put yourself in that position so publicly.

Kane, Maguire, Rashford, Sancho and Saka - you have shown more courage individually and done more for England and Great Britain than all the haters and racists put together.

Thank you

I agree BUT also its a risk reward decision and they know it.

You take (and make) that winning penalty/goal and you have just springboard yourself to national hero status with numerous advertising and endorsement deals bringing in all that cash.

Courage, but not just for the win and for others but also the selfish reasons. You have to take risks.

People just don’t care, there isn’t much consideration or thought toward the consequence this has on England’s image.

For all of those ‘fans’ criticising ‘snowflakes’ and ‘woke babies’, it’s hypocritical seeing them fight amongst themselves, fighting police and resorting to abuse and all because they didn’t get the result they wanted. Irony.

I have been threatened at knifepoint by England fans on a train because of my nationality. The songs they were singing on the train made clear that they WERE England fans.

With a cracking view

There's a no-nonsense approach by referees in both Rugby codes, and it's respected by all of the players.

FIFA et al should take note !

Also, the likes of Immobile, who's 'injury' was cured by Italy scoring, should be booked !

And what about having a penalty shootout before the game, so the side who lost the shootout have an incentive to win the game in normal time ?

Don't worry, I'm getting my coat !

OP doesn’t say that all football fans are hooligans. But he does overstretch by saying it only happens in football. That is a very localised view. I’m sure other sports have antisocial behaviour but in England it is most closely associated with football.

The only other sport in England that I can think of that seems to regularly have violence and antisocial behaviour is horse racing, with large fights at several race courses in recent years.

Any other sports you can think of that have a history of violence like football?

Totally untrue!

Some people that claim to be England fans are thugs.

Massive difference!

Not that easy to disown them I’m afraid, no matter how much you want to. Some England fans are racist thugs, most aren’t.

You can’t just whitewash these guys away and say they are not fans.

Yes I can and I will.

They are fans.

And you know this how?

The England shirts? The England songs?

I have pair of running shoes but I don't run. "

Being at the football ground can be a bit of a giveaway too.

Your efforts to pretend that the bad element of England fans don’t exist is sad

Many "fans" that I saw out and about yesterday, were what we call "day trippers". Those that only appear when England are doing well. Glory hunters.

You never see them dragging their sad ass back from Blackburn or Reading on a wet February Tuesday night at midnight!

Very frustrating for the majority of fans who behave themselves.

The well behaved fans think that the ultras aren’t real football fans. And ironically, the ultras look at the well-behaved fans in the same way.

True. Similar in rugby. Big difference between the Barbour set singing swing low at twickers vs the welcome you get at a rugby club. International sports events end up with too many people who are there on corporate gigs etc

"19 policemen injured last night as they tried to keep the peace, racist tweets to two players who missed penalties, you dont get this with other sports, unacceptable"

You do, just googling for other sports tthe first one to come up was Rugby. Rugby even have a best list of fights site, although that is actually on the pitch between players rather than between fans.

The following vid is actual fans fighting at a rugby match

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLHZwvWJZcM

And then we have both players and fans fighting in the next video

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/mar/28/fight-fans-salford-red-devils-rugby-league-huddersfield

I hate violence and would never condone any, but the statement of it not happening in other sports is niave or totally misleading

Racist abuse is also not acceptable but it is not just confined to Football fans

Seen some video footage on the internet...absolutely scandelous..one guy was trying to get away and was tripped and then laced with boots as he was lying on ground...and the only thing that went through my thoughts ..lmagine if he had a child with him...if l said that these people are just pure scum it would be an understatement...

"England fans are nothing but thugs"

Grossly inaccurate sweeping generalisations generally add nothing to what is an issue with a minority, albeit a disgraceful minority that is wrong on many levels and needs removing..

It's akin to saying all Doctors and nurses are the same as Shipman and allot which is patently untrue and ridiculous..

You said “they claim to be fans”. That’s a pretty clear statement that they aren’t fans.

You also said they you were happy to whitewash these guys away and say that they aren’t fans, your exact words being “I can and I will”.

The irony is that the ultras see themselves as real fans, and the day trippers on corporate outings as being the imposters.

It’s a minority of England fans and you really do get it in other sports. I’ve seen similar stuff in motor racing. It just gets more coverage in football.

Myself and others doing mountain leadership training has to rescue two badly dressed, not equipped at all 'hill walkers' from the top of Nevis in fact one we had to warm up before getting them off the hill..

They thought they were hill walking and would have described themselves as such had it not gone pear shaped..

Whilst it's off topic it's the same with some Muppet who puts an England shirt on as they can get bladdered, maybe even a ruck with the price etc..

We see the same every time there's a legitimate peaceful protest when the anarchists and rent a mob show up..

It's more complex than all this or all of them are thugs..

Interesting. I’ve read about melees at horse racing but never seen any problems at motor racing. Similar to football violence you say? Attacking fans of other teams? How exactly does motor racing violence kick off? Jenson gives lando a wedgie and then things get out of hand?

There’s definitely guys who are mainly there for the trouble, but they see that as an important part of the fabric of England support. They see themselves as the hard men at the head of the pack, defending England territory and reputation (yes!), and see the day trippers as imposters.

Worth reading a few books if you’re interested

Exactly

People trying to distance them from English football are wrong

They definitely are true England supporters who as you say just happen to also be racist, violent, hateful individuals

Racism and violence is a very real and current problem for English football

Trying to brush it away with the old "they aren't real fans" just contributes to the casual acceptance of their behaviour

Denial doesn't help the issue

It's nothing new, it was happening in Roman times at the games..

For some toxic masculinity needs an outlet..

Put them in a ring and glove them up then see how 'hard' they think they are..

"I completely agree.

Should bring in Ref Mics like they have in rugby. I'm sure when the sponsorship deals start dropping away the backchat and lack of respect might change.

These people may well call themselves football fans but they are still thugs and use football matches as an outlet for their behaviour.

These people are almost certainly thugs and racists in every aspect of their lives.

Typically, they are also rabid, committed football fans. No use pretending otherwise. Every right-minded person disapproves of their behaviour, but trying to persuade anyone that they are not football fans is farcical. Seriously, read some books about these guys, not I just are they very definitely football fans, they view themselves as “real” football fans, and the rest of us are posers.
