Centre

They played beautifully throughout the tournament and entertained.

But in the final game, they just didn’t take control of the game and create chances. It’s the final and that is the time to play your heart out and they just decided to be cagey and defend all through and all for a 1-0 lead!

In that way, they reverted to what precious English teams have always done on the biggest stages - just be defensive and cagey.

Hope they learn from this and go on to greater things at the World Cup.

Moral of the story - take your fucking chances with everything you’ve got when you get it and don’t rely on a penalty to take you through.

Totally agree. The players in this current England team would sweat blood for Southgate and nobody wants to loose on penalties! Its a bit of a lottery who wins a shootout and I dont care who you are, when you are standing there in front of 60,000 plus people the pressure is immense.I am so proud of those young players and what they've achieved and hopefully this will be a catalyst to push on in the future

Sometimes their can be a bad time to score and doing so after only two mins set the pattern for the entire match! England invited the Italians to control the tempo straight after that goal and it was only going to end one way.

Substitutions weren’t made at the right time and when England had the chance to really put the pressure, on Southgate failed to capitalise! They had two centre backs on yellow cards for extra time so why didn’t he bring on Sancho or Rashford to stretch them and induce the inevitable fouls and hopefully red cards. Sadly he wasn’t willing to take off the ineffective Kane or Sterling and ultimately that was England’s downfall.

Penalties was always going to bring far too much pressure being both at Wembley and in such a huge game! Italy were the better team throughout but where there for the taking and Southgate was far too cautious. Hopefully he will learn from this as he did from the World Cup but only time will tell

Pick a top corner, practice it over and over and smash it there in a shootout! No keeper in the world is saving it if you hit it right in a top corner so amazes me every time these players bounce like Tigger or run on the spot 19 times before taking it

Nobody is suggesting that anyone wanted to miss, just that they might have stood a better chance of success if they weren’t trying to be a bit too clever about it. The shuffle up to the ball looks great when it works, but even the player the commentators were calling the best penalty taker in the world got it wrong. It’s a high risk strategy, and a final is a dangerous time to take unnecessary risks

No it wasn’t indecisive, the stuttering approach is a deliberate technique. One where you look amazing and super-confident if you nail it (like Italy in previous shootout), and look like an absolute plonker if you miss.

It’s a high risk strategy, particularly in a final, and most players would simply put their laces through it and force the keeper to make a good save

I often find post match analysis tends to be very binary.

Italy dominated possession and had a greater number of chances to win it.

They did to us what we have done to every other team up until the final.

We managed to turn it around toward the end of normal time and extra time, but just could not get a shot away.

I don't understand people who are all about the win. That way in life leads to much disappointment as even the top sides in the world lose more than they win.

It was a decent game, good tournament and further progress made by this team.

The reality is that England had the easiest path to the final of any team to ever reach a European Final. The beat an aging German team who were very lucky to even get out of their group. England were only the 4th or 5th best team in the tournament .. behind Italy, Belgium, France, Spain

This description of an armchair sports person made me laugh. I love the irony that whilst so many in this country wear sports kit were also a nation heading towards an obesity pandemic.

I didn't watch the match but I have seen the penalty; he did seem a bit cocky to me (given the importance of that penalty) but he totally fooled the Italian goal keeper (which would mean his strategy was good), just a shame his shot missed.

I don't have a clue about football so I'm in no position to comment on him as a footballer but having spent my entire adult like involved in sport (in one way or another), I do know that when an athlete is overconfident, they make mistakes.

Fair point. Any goalkeeper who doesn't save 5 out 5 penalties is obviously an absolute disgrace! I mean, they have a whole 12 yards between them and the ball. What more could they possibly want??

They will learn from this and move on, hopefully upwards and onwards.

Nobody wants to miss a penalty, but it happens. Roberto Baggio has missed a penalty, Diego Maradona, Messi and Christiano Ronaldo has missed a penalty. They are some of the greatest and experienced players in the world. But you know what? Shit happens. If you love a sport you have to take the bad with the good. Keep the faith and keep on going. Most importantly, keep a sense of perspective, don’t engage in the over inflated media hype and just enjoy it for what it is. Armchair management is a piece of piss, and hindsight is a marvellous thing. But it changes nowt.

I understand he must be feeling dreadful and I don't really wish to compound it, but I do want to get something off my chest. Surely the very least you can expect from a good player is that from the penalty spot they get the ball going in the direction of the goal? The only thing that should be able to stop it going in is the goalie. When Gareth Southgate took his penalty that was saved in 1996, at least it would have gone in but for the goalie. I don't fault him. Penalties can get saved.

What happened last night was that the goalie didn't even need to stop it. He could have not moved a muscle and watch the ball head away from the goal. If I had taken a penalty, I'm certain the goalie would have been able to stop it, but the ball would at least go in a direction of the goal and would cross the line but for the goalie. That guy last night didn't even achieve that much.

Do I not like that.

"It's all very easy to talk about and criticise when you've neve been in that position and never will."

So much negativity.

I hadnt understood how easy it is to take a penalty with the pressure of millions of people watching. Thanks to this thread I do now

These guys are professionals, highly trained and paid excessive amounts of money. If a guy takes a penalty and it is saved, then that is down to the skills of the goal keeper. If a guy takes a penalty and misses, then that is down to incompetence.

Seems a bit harsh. So anyone that makes a mistake in their job is 'incompetent'?

Have you ever made a mistake at work? Does that make you incompetent?

With the level of training and the fact they are the (best) in the country and over paid accordingly, yes, I would call it incompetence

I don't care what anyone says, they should be so fucking proud of their efforts and achievements. All these twatting armchair experts who slag off and think they know better. Fine. Show us all you could do better you chuffing moron

Rio Ferdinand said himself when he took a penalty he couldn't feel his legs.

I've taken penalties in my sport, without the eyes of the nation watching and hopes of millions on my shoulders. Without the pressures and knowledge that if I miss there's every chance I'll be hated and blamed, ridiculed and trolled.

Fuck anyone who thinks they could do better. Fuck anyone who acts like a dick because someone else didn't score a goal. I bet any of you lot bitching would have pissed your pants in front of millions and had a chuffing panic attack.

I think they all hit the target. Rashford was out by a few centimetres, so it's pretty close.

If the keeper saves it then there is little you can do.

If they had spoonered it over the bar or wide of the post you can say poor penalty, but if they hit the target the rest is in the lap of chance.

I Agree P.P! Not kissing bum - you are spot on.

We have done better than Lineker, Shearer & Ferdinand ever did....

I'm so proud and pleased for the young players. What a magnificent job! They surely can get better in the future?

To be honest I'm surprised England as a nation do well in any sport!!!!

We certainly don't invest in our young talent like we should or like other countries do.

I would love to see a young person from a housing estate excelling at say golf; horse riding; polo; tennis. I don't like to see class barriers to anything.

Losing was secondary to the long way this team has come and I for one, am proud of them and I am proud of England! I did not think that I would be thinking let alone saying this since the aftermath of Brexit but last night I was genuinely proud.

Proud because they played brilliantly in some parts, managed to not get a single yellow card versus 4 from the other team,

they are a very diverse team that appears to be following a leader like Southgate who clearly sees the potential many of these very young players have.

Proud of how the players responded to the abuse they have been receiving. Proud because they took the knee irrespective of the likes of the PM laughing it off, referring to ethnic minorities as "piccaninnies" and "letterboxes", and don't even get me started on the Home Secretary.

I believe this match has done more to unite a very much divided country than our politicians have done in the 5 years since Brexit.

I want to say this one more time... I was and still am proud of our performance last night.

Agree

I was in the pub last night and it was great vibes, no abuse, no aggression and pure unity.

The scenes we saw are dreadful. The abuse a throwback to things we’d expect 40/50 years ago but this group have done so much to unite a country that has probably never been so divided. The racial undertones from our leaders act as an enabler for those keyboard warriors to show their true colours.

It’s just a shame that you go on line and see the lengths people go to to abuse people doing their job, proud to represent their country.

The problem is they lurk among us. They smile in our face and act as friends, colleagues, associates but time and time again they slip and and show their true colours

Penalties are a lottery..... We had enough firepower on the bench to win that game in extra time but instead he brought a defensive midfielder on iin Jordan Henderson. We have done amazing to get this far. Tactically Southgate fell short in my opinion. Can we take it another step further in Qatar? Of course not. Harry Kane could hardly breath on a rainy evening at Wembley.... Wait till the team gets in 90 degrees

Perhaps the decision was not perfect, hindsight is a wonderful thing. As for Kane, perhaps he was exhausted, perhaps despite his fitness he has hayfever/ asthma that brings on difficulty in breathing when it rains, I don't know. He is an amazing payer though.

Apologies if I've missed it but can we have some for Jordan Pickford too ? Only conceded one goal from open play in seven games and saved 2/5 penalties last night. Normally that would have been enough to win a shootout and he'd be today's hero.

Missin’ Yo’ Kissin’

Most of you not in my neck of the woods may know this.... Saw it today!

A guy was stopped in Notts. by BBC midlands news reporter - i think it's Navtej Johal.

The guy was asked what did he think of the England game? He said that he did'nt know as he didn't see it but was on his way to go & get a paper so he could read all about it (he showed a £10 note as proof.)

Nav. says to him really? You didn't see it? He replies no. Nav. says do you want me to tell you? The guy replies yeah go on then... He describes we scored, they scored, goes into extra time. Then penalties. Then we lost on penalties.

The guy takes his glasses off tears rolling down his eyes as he tries to wipe them away.

It was sweet& touching (yes, I am a big girly man - I don't care a crap), but compelling to watch. Golden nugget reporting. I bet Nav was creaming his reporting underwear....

If you are in the midlands region you should get to see it again tonight. Watch it if you can... I don't know if they will release it in the next dew days?

I'm looking forward to the Olympics now. The football is in the past where it should be! "Move Along" just like the song by the All American Rejects...

We really have been treated to football, tennis & now Olympics. Amazing stuff!

Enjoy that instead.

I know you were not directing the question at me, but as far as I am concerned nobody was incompetent in this match. The only incompetence I have seen since the match was that of people judging the players and the manager.

Perhaps it shows through all these people who genuinely support(ed) our team, who see this as a step forward to greater things and who are actually the overwhelming majority going by what is happening on social media...

"Sounds like all Southgate had to do was pick the penalty takers from this forum.

I mean who’s going to be better, a naturally gifted footballer who’s honed his skills for years and is at the peak of physical condition or a middle age bloke sat in his pants on the sofa eating Pringles that gets out of breath getting up and walking to the fridge."

It wasn’t Pringles it was McCoys

"Apologies if I've missed it but can we have some for Jordan Pickford too ? Only conceded one goal from open play in seven games and saved 2/5 penalties last night. Normally that would have been enough to win a shootout and he'd be today's hero.

Whole heartedly agree

According to your earlier post about the penelty takers being incomptent if they miss - surely he's incomptent because he only saved two? Or is there another reason that hes a hero and the three whos penalties were saved are incompetent?

The logic doesn't work like that.
