England flags at No 10

Cardiff

Just saw the very cheap decorations of No10, with BJ attempting to get on the bandwagon.

Two questions:

1. Should the PM of Britain be pushing an English agenda?

2. If Wales, Scotland or NI were in the same position as England, would No10 be decked out in their colours?

As a Welsh & Scottish couple, we are supporting the England team - Southgate and the team are excellent ambassadors, much more so than the Tory’s.

Just interested to see where people would be on this one…

Something to unify has to be a positive right now. It’s not political so don’t see the issue.

1 Yes he should

2 Definitely not, they distance themselves as much as possible from England especially that nutter in Scotland

As far as I’m concerned they can build high walls and out borders up, they want devolution so they can go the full hog and sever them selves from England permanently

He is supposed to be the PM of the UK & N Ireland. He only plays to an English agenda though. So I don’t think he is trying to unify anything. It just looked shonky.

If the team win, and we hope they do, then they deserve the credit & not BJ!

It isn’t about having a fight, it is pointing out ‘casual’ nationalism from the PM of the UK. If you are English, you probably don’t notice it, but if you aren’t then you do. We support England to win, but we also support the Union - not a BJ strongpoint these days.

I sometimes think that even if Boris Johnson personally discovered the cure for cancer, some people would still hate him for it.

I'm sure that the flags of Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland are probably folded neatly in a drawer right by the front door just waiting to be festooned all over Number 10 the very moment that any of those teams are poised to play in a significant football final, if that should ever happen

Interesting I was listening to a radio show about 66...apparently the first rounds weren't even shown on TV. The first match shown on TV was started 30 minutes into it as they would not cancel coronation Street. The nation barely noticed it was on for the first few rounds. A carnet of 10 tickets for matches was a fiver.... Oh how times change. My point being if wilson had have flown bunting in 66 (did he? Didn't he.?) who cares... It was a few life times ago. And certainly not in an age where for good or for bad, the success of our football teams seem to be the lifeblood for us.... Did nicola fly any flags when Scotland were in the tournament? Don't know, don't are... But I hope she did as easily as any other Scotland fan.

The job was an impossible task from the beginning. Boris was the only one brave enough to put himself forward for it. I seem to remember plenty sloping away from the job when it was clear it was about to get messy.

So yes… he has ever right to be proud of England for making it to the final after the wreck of the last couple of years.

I do find it curious that somehow some people can make a news story out of our pm flying a flag in support of our nation. The building is in England, he's English, England are playing in a final, like it or not there are 55m English here and even though I detest football, clearly lots of people are fans. If he makes a gesture of support he is wrong, if he doesn't make a gesture of support he is wrong... And by the way... Does anyone think Boris got up his step ladder to drape them across number 10?

Its the Olympics in a few weeks, are we allowed to show support for that?

Would we care if Gordon Brown had the Scottish flag at number ten when he was PM? If not then nobody should care if Borris does.

Even as late as the 80s football fans were seen as pariahs.

Footy only became trendy here in 1996

What a poxy pathetic attempt of a thread to cause divisions when sport is a great way to unify.

Technically I think you will find the Welsh are the most ancient Britons and we are genetically distinct from the rest of mainland Britain

Agree with your observation about No 10. The same problem of representation arises with the use of the anthem of the United Kingdom as a whole (and still shared as an official anthem of Canada and New Zealand) - "God Save the Queen" - as the anthem of England. No other country we know sings the anthem of the state as a whole "against" other parts of that state. Can't imagine the French singing the Marseillaise "against" Corsica, Britanny or Alsace.

"Just saw the very cheap decorations of No10, with BJ attempting to get on the bandwagon.

Harsh on johnson that.

He has always been a big footy fan"

And there you have your answer folks.

If Lionel, of all people, is prepared to say it’s ‘ harsh on Johnson’ , then I don’t think it should be too troubling for anyone else.

It might be about unifying England, but it does nothing for the UK. He doesn’t even like football- he likes wiff waff! Nor does he actually live in No10.

Yes to England winning, no to the tw*t in

Boris as far as I know is English so he's cheering on England, would you object to Drakeford having a Welsh flag if they ever got to a major final,?

I think he's welcome to support one of the nations he's prime minister for. I'm sure if Wales or Scotland were in the final we'd all be supporting them too.

Also, he'd get back lash if he didn't. I'm not a fan of his, but he can't really do anything right without someone taking offence.

Agree... Trouble is... More often than not... Its forbidden or called racist.. St George's day... A good example. We can be proud of being English and also be proud of our Scottish and Welsh neighbours... (and French for that matter)... Doesn't make anyone racist or any other ist.

"Let's inite behind our national team... Remainers and Brexiteers ...unite and support our country

What National team though…

The one on the final..

Everyone get behind our last surviving competitor..

Wales out, Scotland out..

Come on England "

This really!

If we were out and Wales, Scotland or Ireland were in the final then I’d root for them - and I’d hope most others would too!

I’m British first. If it were England and Wales (say) in the final then I’d hope England won because I live in England and was born here - but I’d still be happy for Wales if they won instead. I honestly don’t get all the negativity that comes from so many people - there are far worse places to be/live that Britain imo.

As for Boris bedecking no 10 in England flags - why not? It’s the first time we’ve reached a male football final in over half a century - let’s celebrate it!

Despite saying your'e supporting England it's still an anti English comment to make. If you were lucky enough to be English, you would notice the dislike/hate against the English. Off course he should show the flag doh!!! He would do the same for the other nations, but let's be honest, thats never going to happen. I always support the other sides when the home nations play.
